Here's a thread for newts like myself and yourself to introduce ourselves so as not to irritate the Old Guard types with a bazillion identical "My Name Is" posts. Also for the Old Guard types themselves to get a load of the new meat. So heregoes.

Qalyn sounds suspiciously like Colin. I live in Brooklyn, NY, where I am a journalism student, though I constantly think of chucking it for a welding certification. I came to Barbelith via Mordant's condition via memepool. I lurked here for a couple of weeks while membership was closed, and I think you guys are very spiffy. I think the pirate/ninja dichotomy is shortsighted and unfortunate. I don't think the coming war in Iraq has anything to do with ideology. I just returned from a trip to New Orleans, where I may have crossed paths with that serial killer they've got down there.

Nice to meetcha.

OoOoOoooh, spooky! (The serial killer thing, that is.)

Welcome to Barbelith, Qalyn, and cheers for starting a general introductions thread. Might be worth making the title even more explicit, though - maybe adding 'Newbies say hello here' or something, so it's obvious to newcomers skimming the threads. While you're at it, adding a topic abstract will likely make Tom (guy who owns and runs the place) love you even more...

Welcome to Barbelith, Qalyn!

(I'm not always completely mental, honest.)

I think this is a good idea, so as to keep introductions in one place and not to annoy Haus, he's sensitive. So welcome, Qalyn. Is that a hard Q? I'm thinking "kwa-lin" but I may be wrong. Oh, and with that sort of attitude I think you're definitely a ninja.

you got memepooled, mordant? groovy

fridge: you got memepooled, mordant?
Mmm. The fit thread. I blogged it, as per your suggestion. Two days later my hit-rate went from under twenty a day to 1000+ per day. My temporal lobe is now famous.

Sorry, n00bs. Do carry on.

Seems like someone did that already.

Oh, and with that sort of attitude I think you're definitely a ninja.

Nah, I'm a cowboy -- pirate on the maternal side, ninja on the other. Second generation, y'know.

Yee-haw!

You know, I may defect from being a ninja to being a cowboy. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me.

Yeah, but it can be all quiet and ninja-like, too.

No ninja would ever initiate an "introduction thread".

not unless they were a double secret ninja. The ninja that is so covert that they walk in, announce themselves, and still vanishes into the shadows. Right before your very eyes!!!

Well let's put this thread to some use. I'm from Argentina, 22 years old, I study engineering and I've been lurking here for years; I learned about this whole barbelith thing from the first page of issue 12 of Invisibles vol 3 (where grant said that from then on he would be answering mail on Barbelith) Many things kept me from posting here before, mainly the problems I might have trying to express things in english and not having enough money to pay the use of internet. And now I've overcome the money problem; and I'm gonna give it a shot with the language.
Well I also know Flux from translating one of the posts from his blog to spanish and posting it on my own beautiful, shiny blog.
What else can I say? I'm listening to Obstacle 1 now (though I think Interpol's overrated). Currently re-reading Starman by Robinson & Harris. Last movie I saw was Lord of The Rings 2 (saw it last tuesday, it's just opened here) and didn't like it. Last cd I bought was Kylie's "Fever" Special edition (the first cd I buy in a looong time, I download most of the music I listen to). My favorite album from last year was Spoon's "Kill The Moonligth" I think Sugababes should take over the world and remake it on their own image. I get drunk from time to time. I watch tv a lot.
I think that by now you all realise that my english sucks.

Hello! Your English seems pretty damn good to me, unless you were actually saying something completely different from what I thought you were saying and it just happened to make sense.

Well I didn't expect such a quick answer! Thank you!
One of my problems (for example) is that I'm trying to say a really clever thing to answer to you but I have NO clue about how to say it in english...anyway it's not such an important thing.

oh and a very important thing I forgot to say: I love football. I like teams from all over the world (arsenal in england, barcelona in spain, etc), but my heart belongs only to the great Boca Juniors (Maradona's football team)

I love football, too, Miguel.

Unfortunately, I support Aberdeen F.C., which is rarely a cause for happiness.

It's a perverse thing, you know.

I know, football is just like that. I envy people who don't like football and I wouldn't encourage anyone to get into it. When things for your team are going straight, football's the best thing that can happen to you. But if things are going bad (which happens too often), it can mess with your whole life.

Small world, Duncan. Though I attend school here in the U.S. I spent a semester in Aberdeen, Scotland. I saw an Aberdeen match. Not only did I see them play but I saw them win. A rare occurance that season.

Miguel, you're going to fit in here just fine. Your writing in English is a lot better than a lot of native speakers I've come across in the States, so don't be so nervous about that!

It can certainly put a damper on Saturdays.

Slim, when was that? Who against? Why were you in Aberdeen? Cool, nonetheless.

Jub
08:29 / 06.01.03
Hello - I'm Jub, another newbie.
Jub stands for Junior Under Barstaff and was used in this club I worked at when I was younger as a reference for the newbies at the club who weren't allowed on the bar yet, and had to collect glasses, empty ashtrays etc - you get the picture. Anyway it wasn't exactly a term of endearance eg: "oh bum, someone's just puked - get one of the jubs to clean it up". Being a jub was horrid but it didn't last too long ubefore you were allowed on the bar. I made the mistake of telling some mates about this after I finished there and the name stuck.
I live and work in London. I can't really remember how I came across Barbelith, probably a link from a blog somewhere. I've long been tempted by it's ways - but also a little intimidated so great idea to have this thread. Cheers Qalyn.
It's monday morning - am at work, and am trying to deal with the hangover from hell. In my addled state I can't really think what else to put that people may find interesting. Booze eh?

Hi, My name is Cubby. Not much to say, really: Posted a couple of times but with no great frequencey. I live in the states, east coast. I have a Dramatic Arts degree concentrating in lighting ('though while i was there my obsession was Improv), but am hiding out in retail right now. I am just shy of huge, and have a rather high voice. I have an irrational conviction that I will die in a little less than three years, and some one once told me that I should have a scribe follow me around to write down every thing I say. I am also a Pirate/Saggitarius

How can you tell whether you're a ninja or pirate?

Is it like a starsign? Aries, I am - the ram.

I totally want to be a ninja, though. In fact, I am.

hello, i am ms. mononoke palomar and i am not new to barbalith. i used to walk ten miles in knee deep snow each way to get to the nexus. i still live in the states and have been stuck for he past few months in a tiny town, reading all about literary theory and listening to chan marshall, but will soon start wandering again.

thanks to tom, grant, ganesh, jack, haus and all the other oldies who have kept me amused and, eerrmmm...stimulated(?) for the past few years.

i am a seafaring ninja.
