Iraq, Russia Plan Economic Deal, Newspaper Says
This is an interesting development. Russia has disagreed with the US forcefully in the past over intervention in the Balkans; now, it seems to be doing the same over the Axis Of Evil.
I can see two major motivations here:
(a) the desire to be seen, despite better diplomatic relations with the US, as a world player not under the thumb of the US
(b) a desire to gain strategic and economic influence in areas which the US has abandoned or rejected - sensible, but what does it imply for the future? Healthy competition or conflict?
If it prevents an attack on Iraq, it's a good thing. On the other hand, I distrust Putin's overall motives intensely. He appears to be extremely intelligent and capable, which just makes it worse.
I'm wondering how the USG will react to this behaviour. |
