"In tents" reading matter.

Going to Cornwall next week. In a tent. Need some suggestions for reading matter. Already toying with Jamaica Inn, of course, but fancy something a bit spooky and seaside-y. Don't want to re-read Lovecraft again as have done so recently.

Any thoughts?

Moonfleet by J D Falkner - I don't think it's set in Cornwall, but it is in the West Country somewhere - smuggling and treasure and churchyards and so on, very enjoyable.

Arrr!!! Smugglin'!

"Martha Peake", by Patrick McGrath. Has Cornish smugglers, spooky gothic moors and the American War of Independence! All in one lovely book! And, though it's not a "spooky" book per se, it, as all Patrick McGrath's stuff, is deliciously unsettling...

Totally off the matter - has anyone been to Jamaica Inn? I went quite a long time ago and I've got an odd memory of stuffed cats in dresses and placed so they looked like they were acting out scenes.

Yeah, it's a cabinet of curiosities - I think it may be the one that used to be at Arundel, actually...

Is there more than one, then? Because it's on my tourist trail for next week.

I've driven past Jamaica Inn.

And I was sure Moonfleet was Cornwall... (cracking book, bit drawn out though).

More than one cabinet of curiosities, or more than one Jamaica Inn?

You should take Over Sea, Under Stone and Greenwitch too, they're both set in Cornwall...

That's a good idea, you can follow the old one's trail around Cornwall.

There's one Jamaica Inn, I don't remember it that well but I do recall big glass cabinets with lots of stuffed animals in them, the cats are vivid in my mind because I have two and it freaked me out pretty badly when I saw dead ones in clothes. You should definitely go!

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. Should be enough to keep me from getting in the way of bronzed surfing hunks who'll kick sand in my face like I'm the guy from the Charles Atlas ad.
