Dream catchers, bindis, tie-dye, dreads and "chakra massage" do not a magickman make.

Agreed! I was thinking more along the lines of the Nagual events some of our own barbfolk have attended. The first one I went to at a place in Vauxhall had some of the most interesting psy trance I've heard played at a club in ages. The mixing wasn't quite up to scratch, but the tracks were blistering.

Dunno that I'd agree that psy trance is without depth or scope, or hasn't evolved at all, but my knowledge of specific dj's and when things were released isn't broad enough to get down to the nitty gritty with you. I guess it is a little stuck in that late 90s Europe zone, but I think it's at least cut off it's ponytail.

I must admit to never having put in a concerted effort to investigate further into techno. Keep meaning to go to one of those Lost events, but never quite make it.

Moriarty - know what you mean about dancing as a way to get to know people...I often find walking into big groups of people gathered around a table in a pub, but find the whole 'communicating by dancing' thing much easier, and sometimes alot more fun... besides, there's always the post-club bit for actually *talking* to people! Ditto with parties, find them loads easier if they're the kind of party there's a bit where people dance...

And the reason you never hear us talking about clubbing here is because we can never agree a place/style... pubs are an easy lowest common denominator option...

Ty - that sounds ace, put me down for a trip sometime...

Oh, and Runce, in favour of psy trance clubs - they were where where my ex transformed from being someone who was terribly shy to being quite possibly the best dancer in the world ever, forever having people crack on to him while he's dancing...

Oh and will someone please tell me what this Lost thing is all about? *nervously* as there seems to be some danger of agreement on a club...

Lost is a 'legendary' detroit techno party that's been going for about 10 years in London.

Pros: they get great DJs like Juan Atkins, Francois Kevorkian and Jeff Mills and give 'em nice long sets

Cons: people who take detroit techno waaaaaay too seriously.

They're always packed, always 90% dancers and always go right to the bitter end.

Oh and.

FUCK TRANCE

Gaaaahhh. Did anyone see that channel 4 documentary on ver kids and drugs a couple of nights ago featuring horrifically earnest public school 'experimenter' and his twatty mates at a selection of trance nights complete with fluoro wall hangings, fire twirlers and every other bastard cliche about this most horrible of scenes, WHICH ARE ALL FUCKING TRUE..

Aha. Thankyou Ty for filling the gaps in my education yet again. as someone who's in danger of taking Detriot techno far too seriously, this sound ideal, would be v.up for this. Went to a jeff mills night in tokyo a couple of years ago, it was amazing

As for your rant, takes me back to the days when I was Dayglo Indian Goddess for precisely this reason... still yet to see a club with Dayglo Apostles decorating the walls...

And as for Ty being dubious about people 'taking music waaaay too seriously', allow me to pick myself up off the floor...

All scenes have their cliches, and I have the same problem with hippy cliches and 18 year olds with glo sticks as you do Lyra. But it's not a reason to dismiss a style of music. And psy trance nights are different to your uplifting trance kind of patrons. And furthermore, a bit of visual stimuli is not such a bad thing when you're tripping.

I've been emailing my mate who's a dj and my regular dancing partner in order to get some facts, and this is what he says -

....and techno is the bastard child of electronica. Obviously a
techno freak we shall have to refute.

Psy-trance has evolved from the point of view that there are new artists every year who continue to experiment and try to take the music to a new level. Look at Tsyoshi Suzuki, been around since at least 1995 and his musical style develops just like any other artist. New artists like Infected Mushroom (Israel) and Gil Paradox (Australia) have put out new material in the last 12 months that take the music on their own paths and through their own interpretations of what we call psy-trance. Heck, look at the Pulse series of CD's out of Germany and the Goa-Head series too, #12 of the latter is quite funky in terms of it's rythyms and has good production, yet the latest release I have being #16 is quite organic in it's musical style, trying to be original in different by using new sounds.

Evolution !!!! Look at Cass & Slide who are very well known in the Progressive house genre, yet have had a track released on a Pulse compilation (#10 I think). Evolution is a term that encompasses change, and to say a musical style hasn't changed over the last seven years it like saying Metallica still play heavy metal thrash, or U2 play stirring songs about Northern Ireland.

And my favourite bit was where he called you "loose-tongued musical villains".
