Reopening the board to new members

What do people think? I've got the ability now to block the IP addresses of anyone who really pisses around on the board, so HOPEFULLY we'd be able to deal with trouble-makers fairly quickly (whatever user name they try to sign in as). But obviously there are attendant risks. Thoughts please?

Definitely. As we're well into a "what raises your hackles about this place" thread I'd say we could do with some new blood.

I think reopening the board is fundamentally a good idea, but better trollguards (i.e ones not depending on the small number of current moderators or on Tom) would probably be a good idea, and a prohibition on freemail accounts may not be a bad idea. It goes without saying that a number of "spare" suits will immediately be reserved by individuals who may need them, so by opening the board we are in a sense acknowledging the restoration of that set-up.

Interestingly enough, I've been wanting to introduce someone here, but thought the last couple of weeks probably wasn't the best time!
As regards risk- if it proves to be a mistake, you can always close the borders again. I'm fairly optimistic it wouldn't, though.

...goes without saying that a number of "spare" suits will immediately be reserved by individuals who may need them, so by opening the board we are in a sense acknowledging the restoration of that set-up...

And thus the impossibility of simply "closing the gates again" and returning everything to tickety-boo status.

Worth considering, is all.

Tann, my only concern regarding the non-use of freemail addresses is that people like me would not be able to join the board.

Currently I don't have email access at home (so therefore no ISP), I don't have a permanent job - so I don't have an "official" email address and if I am not working I have to log in at internet cafe's, all of which means I have to use an email service like hotmail that I can get at anywhere.

I think I know what you are getting at and I acknowledge the potential benefits of being better able to clearly identify, and therefore take care of, any trouble makers, but it would still restrict those who could take up membership.

This will be welcome, but I agree with Haus that there need to be more Troll guards. A significant number of new moderators seems like an easy way to make a difference.

I too use freemail (yahoo) and have similar access problems to angel, & I know a lot of long-standing and upstanding posters do too - so it may not be an ideal solution even though the use of freemail does allow trolls to join anonymously...

Well, myself and Grant are now (presumably, since I haven't yet tried it) able to 'lock' suits and deal quickly with obvious trolling (such as spamming). Several of you have my mobile number and can text me an alert; if I've got PC access, I'll do my best to respond. I think that this, along with a concerted attempt to follow Modthree's suggestions (examine and own our personal interactions with trolls; crack down on obvious troll behaviour by all means, but try not to get hung up on who is and isn't Andrew - if he's evolved enough to co-exist fairly peaceably, leave him to it) and direct newbies to the FAQ where appropriate, should enable us to cope reasonably well with most eventualities.

And yeah, we do need new blood...

I use a yahoo account which is not even free - I pay for it.

Freemail banning doesn't work, anyway, for a determined troll; there are too many webmail and redirection providers. I could set up several dozen in the next couple of hours which nobody would have heard of.

In general, I'm for it. I agree with G that acting against troll behaviour rather than identity is the key. And yes, open access will probably mean we have to deal with other tiresome samey trolls on a regular basis. But, y'know, that's the price you pay.

A possible suggestion along the "trollguard" line: specific trollguards who AREN'T moderators.

Moderation is more than just trollguarding - it's managerial; handling formatting, textual problems, multiposting, tidying the forum. Trollguarding is a part of moderation, sure. But I find that in moderating one forum, I tend to concentrate on it far more for trolling, stuff that needs editing, topics that need changing, than I do in the other fora which I just read, contribute to, but don't moderate. Those of you who moderate several fora might think differently, but I'm more aware of specifics going on in Film/TV/Theatre than I am in, say, Music (which I read regularly) or Magick (which I hardly read).

Roving moderation is one way around - having new mods not attached anywhere. Or setting up a kind of mod that's empowered simply to do trollwatch stuff. That creates hierarchy, though, which Tom may not be very interested in. I just feel that bumping up moderation levels of the specific fora isn't necessary, whilst bumping up the general moderation of Barbelith as a whole is a better idea. Just me thinking aloud again.

Also: yes, I think a crackdown on behaviour is worthwhile. Just because I've seen some posts that have been a bit Trolly but from people who have turned out, afaict, to not be trolls at all. Sometimes you're not aware how what you write turns out, after all, and it'd make the general quality of posting better.

I'd offer a cautious "yes" to this (although I can think of several ways in which one could get round an IP ban).

I'd also like to offer a couple of not-entirely tangental observations...

One: Gleefully strapping on your size 19s and jumping up and down on someone just because they've made an eggy post, or a post which smells eggy from certain angles, is possibly not the most reliable technique for promoting understanding and tolerance. Sometimes a simple "WTF?" is enough.

Two: Barbelith is one of the few social arenas where percived influence does not equate to actual influence. The prevailing culture is such that it would be very hard for a "net cop" (yes, even one in a moderator's hat) to actually do any real damage. We've already lost at least one barbeloid to this kind of witch-hunting; let's try not to lose any more, eh?

In both cases, a quick step-back-and-count-to-5 might make all the diff.

Absolutely - and I reckon the more gentle 'WTF?'ing that can be done via PM, the better. Saves on public grandstanding.

Sounds good though bolstering the "defenses" a bit should coincide with it somewhat. Also as mentioned in previous threads, having people honor an agreement when becoming part of the community should help justify actions that may affect newbies/members.

Maybe a response email (pending registration) that hyperlinks to FAQ's, topics of interest, and contacts for questions and potential problems, etc. Maybe a statement of purpose, etc. might be a good way to bring people up to speed as well.

I'd be happy to help with a general policy page/email, etc. if there's a need.

Otherwise, opening the floodgates will be good as it'll open discussion up and hopefully add some good people to the roster.

Aye, PMs are good. Keep it out of sight as much as possible, and actually deal with the misbehaver to try to improve them. I also think we should nom a few more mods all around as a preemptive measure before opening the gates. Otherwise, it will be good to see new blood again.

As I've said in a PM to you Tom I'd be willing to take on any moderating duties, if people think I can be trusted. Anywhere except the Magick, really. As it scares me. Well, the offer's there.

(I work in senior management you know. And I know important people, doctors, dentists, lawyers and the like).

I'm happy to - Conversation, Switchboard, Policy, Creation and Gethering are the areas that probably make most sense. Likewise trollguarding, if it is deemed necessary.

Quite happy to mod conversation, switchboard, laboratory, other if required, but I should point out that I'm going to be pretty rushed and may lack home net access for a bit in a few weeks' time. Since I am emigrating. After that, though, I'll be back.

I'm up for this, I have a few people I was going to poke to have a look round and join. Also its a good time for it, gives about a month before student types come online for things to settle. Also its in time for refugees from the WEF.
Definate yes to new blood, the place was getting a little bit stuffy recently (although its picked up a lot in the lastfew weeks), throw the windows open and air the carpets.

as policy hardly takes any time, chuck me on something else, if you like... conversation/gathering/books are the ones I spend most time on aside from policy and headshop, which seem to be covered... could probably do music (and art/design, which probably doesn't really need it, but bear it in mind...)

Um, I give my support to this too.

Don't really care much for all this troll-paranoia business to be honest, but if it lets new members in, I'll do my bit.

I wouldn't mind button pushing duties elsewhere, though I rarely stray far from the Magick. Policy, maybe? I'm generally open for more work if you need me.
