Milligan taking over Authority???

From the rumormill at CHUD

"...rumors abound that Milligan is topping the list of potential candidates for The Authority re-launch scheduled for next year."

Obviously this is just a rumor, but I don't know what to think about this. I love Milligan and all, but does he have the capability to write two different team books every month? I'm afraid it would squeeze him dry. One or both would have to suffer, right?

So, after all the fucking about they did with Millar's last year on the project, would anyone else be willing to stand up and take the chalice, especially as it would presumerably have to be a lot more vanilla for the people that cancelled it in the first place.

Or, you know, not, considering the relaunch is going to be a Mature Readers book unlike the last series. Somehow I'm guessing that you haven't been hearing the rumours about the "remastered" next TP...

It seems sort of silly for him to write The Authority when he writes a comic that outdoes the Authority in every way with X-Statix.

Here's something that's not a rumor that we can look foward to: Milligan is writing a Vertigo Pop! miniseries called London, and Philip Bond is drawing it. You just can't go wrong with those guys, I can't fucking wait.

What a shame: no cor blimeys, no bowler-hats, no rain, no colourful coloquialism and no brit-pop.

I fucking hope.

Weren't the vast majority of Millar's problems with the title because Quitely buggered off suddenly? I know they censored a fair bit of it, but did he actually have to change what he wanted to do, or was it just those silly red panels over the violence?

Zoom.

Some of the violence was blurred, but other images were re-drawn altogether—altering the tone of the stories considerably. Most notoriously, an Apollo/Midnighter kiss in the JENNY SPARKS mini became a murky long shot: but original art pages exist showing that DC also cut various exploding heads, using a woman's mouth as an ashtray, use of the word "faggot", and necrophilia.

Note, too, that in that last piece all the racist signs and slogans outside the Colonel's quarters were excised from the final art.

wow. the diminuation of effect in that scene with Shen is tremendous. you really feel something with the original cigar scene, but the "I'm not hungry afterall" version was more like an old Andy Capp comic strip....

Oh, the rumours that the scripts going to be rewritten by someone with some political intelligence? :P It just seems pointless. Why not make the series a Mature Readers without stopping it? I would have thought that with the violence, language and general tone from the start it would have made sense to rebrand it and continue.

Re: Authority remastered

IF they plan to do it, (and at this stage its still a big if) i'm not sure how, short of actuaally redrawing it since at least some of pages in question such as the apollo/midnighter kiss from the jenny sparks series have been sold by the artists. The kiss page is now adorning the wall of one of the editors of www.Ninthart.com

They don't need the original pages - I'm sure they've got electronic masters in the archives at this point. Otherwise the TPB shelves at your LCS would be pretty bare, considering the sheer volume of original artwork that gets sold as soon as the issue is in the can...

LLB- Sure the film and scans exist for the printed pages, and scans can be made of published pages if necessary, but this page never saw publication. I'm not sure what Wilstorms file keeping is like, but I think it unlikely that they kept repro quality scans/ or generate film for a page that they didn't use and asked to be redrawn.

Unless they knew they'd get a lot of mileage out of an "uncensored" TPB down the line. Happens with DVD all the time.

But unfortunately NOT with comics. Remember, this is an industry where even the major publishers haven't kept archieves of previously published material, let alone orginal artwork, films etc (one of the resons that the essential tomb of dracula book was dropped from the schedules was because the incredible amount of time and work it would take to locate artwork/film and copies of the comic in order to put the book together)

Besides which, I am not certain Wildstorm ever paid for the original - apollo midnighter kiss artwork, which would kind of preclude them from publishing it.

That's what they're doing, isn't it? Rebranding it as a mature readers / "Eye of the Storm" title and continuing... They're just doing it with as many "first issues" as they can get away with: Authority: Kev issue 1, Authority Vs. Kev issue 1, Authority volume 2 issue 1... Nothing new there, surely?
