Indubitably..

Should be full of discordian goodness - I'll head there after work (18:00), I think I know what everyone looks like now so I'll keep an eye open.

Well that did nothing to help the theory that I don't like Discordians!

Secret Chiefs is now online though, its just the same as the info Angel posted, but hopefully it will get updated now and again..

Sorry I didn't make it Bear! Had to follow an impulse to just go home.

What was it that irritated you so much? Just curious. I know nothing about Discordians or Discordian theory, so I am intrigued as to what it was that you found so provoking?

Bear
09:37 / 29.08.02
I don't mind the whole Discordian theory and ideas but all the Discordians I've met just seem really nerdy, I'm sure that sounds terrible (especially since I'm lord of the nerds myself) but it all just seems to annoy me, its all in-jokes and giggling, like little kids at school making their own little gang ...

I'm sure Eris wouldn't be happy with her army these days....

Actually its probably all just me, the others there seemed to be enjoying themselves, its making me angry just thinking about it !

I know what you mean, there's something a bit too glib and comfortable about it which jars too much with the idea of discord for my liking.

Having said that, establishing Discordianism as a magickal paradigm 20 years prior to the birth of chaos magic is certainly an accomplishment, and I certainly don't have any problems with Discordian ideas and theory.

It's just when you get people endlessly reciting zany Discordian quotes from the 60's, it gets a bit like the office joker who recites entire Monty Python sketches and expects you to find him funny. Same goes for the Subgenius lot to a certain degree. It just doesn't do anything for me because there doesn't seem to be much originality there, I like the idea of magickal systems/psuedo-religions based on absurdity and creativity but it just doesn't work if the jokes are all 30 years old and made up by somebody else.

Nail hit on head. That's why I don't do the whole Discordian bit very often any more.. and why I don't watch Monty Python any more, funnily enough..

Feck, this is useful. I'm gutted to have missed Doctor Dee & Things Enochian though.
Anyone else know of sources on magic talks and stuff going on? Preferably south of London?

There's SELFS in Greenwich, which is ran by some freinds of mine. They usually have a good range of interesting speakers. The website is: http://www.selfs.co.uk/

Also there's another talk thing on alternate wednesday's to Secret Chiefs that Steve Wilson has started running. Only been to it once so can't remember the name of the pub, somewhere off the Strand. I drunkenly agreed to do a talk there myself at some point, which may or may not happen.

171h December- Saturnalia!!
The end-of-year, end-of-the-pier extravaganza where august occultists, strait laced sorcerers and prissy pagans of all descriptions let their hair down and do their party pieces for pathetic prizes and for the dubious honour of being nominated as an elemental 'Secret Chief for one year (at the end of which they are ritually murdered!!!). Do come along!

Happy 2004 and Hail Janus!

pah, I'm miffed that i missed the last one, and having trouble dealing with the move from the PL... no more ornate toilets... no more cheap beer and cute Antipodean bar staff... it will never be the same again, sob sniff. But that said, the Ship's also a nice pub, so i guess it's okay.

Steve Wilson's Moot with no name, from what I understand, keeps moving location. Does anyone know the website?

i don't think there is one, so I'll post details of the next meeting when I get 'em.

I'm slightly confused. Does the Secret Chiefs move from the PL in the new year or for the lecture on the 3rd of December???

Also Bill, are you going to the Moot with no name? It would be good to catch up with you.

Update on the new venue for next year.
Due to the fact that The Ship has realised that the Wed nights clash with Masonic meetings (insert conspiracy theory here)the new venue is now the Devereux.

Also it is the place for The Moot with no Name, ie turn up on a Wednesday evening and there is bound to be something going on, But note that the Moot with no name starts earlier than Secret Chiefs.

Just wondering, can you be classed as a real initiate of masonry without being initiated in a lodge?

If not, why?

---
18:49 / 13.02.04
Sorry just to clear up, i'm not bothered about being a mason myself and i know they're a very secretive bunch of geezers, buuuut, if you've read up on them and know about the different aspects of the craft, and then have an initiation experience, be it magical, drug assisted or whatever on your own or with friends or whatever outside of the organisation and nothing to do with a lodge, that would make you a mason wouldn't it?

It would in my book anyway. Purely out of curiosity this, it's just something that i was thinking about and it seems right to me.

In fact seeing as i believe in reincarnation, if you was a mason in a past life and then had this experience i'm sure that this would be true. Dunno why i'm even asking.

LVX23
05:03 / 14.02.04
Jack, you'll find that most of these esoteric societies (Masons, Rosicrucians, OTO, GD, etc...) all have guidelines and requirements for initiation. It's not enough that you've had mystical experiences. You need to take certain oaths, read prescribed texts, pass tests, and undergo initiatory rites. There are no past-life grandfather clauses - you still have to prove it to them that you've done the work.

---
12:43 / 14.02.04
Yeah sorry, i was just being annoying i think. I don't think i was meaning whether or not the actual society itself classed you as an initiate, more of a way of circumventing the man made rules and being an initiate in the mind of the powers that those societies worshipped and adhered to. A sort of hidden order alongside the order that is currently known of to a certain extent by the public.

I suppose in that case the person would have to ask the grand architect etc of the relevant society him/herself in prayer or whatever.

For example i get the feeling that the Grand Architect of Masonry, powers that guide the Rosicrucians etc have many long serving initiates outside of the established crafts/orders that further the works and ideals those societies, and that the initiates of the established orders/crafts know nothing of. A sort of doubly hidden order that works behind the scenes of even the establishment specifically as a back-up force and help in emergency situations, times of need etc.

Of course, we don't know the answer to this question so that's why i suggested that i was being annoying, to better phrase it, i was putting forward a question that in hindsight i realise we don't have the answer to.
