Anthrax in mail created by U.S. military

quote:As anthrax continues to turn up in US postal facilities, and postal workers, evidence is emerging that it is an American product. Not only are the bacteria genetically close to the strain the US used in its own anthrax weapons in the 1960s, but New Scientist can reveal that the spores also seem to have been prepared according to the secret US "weaponisation" recipe.

This is troubling, say bioterrorism specialists. While the terrorists behind the anthrax-laced mail US might have got hold of the strain of anthrax in several laboratories around the world, the method the US developed for turning a wet bacterial culture into a dangerous, dry powder is a closely-guarded secret.

Its apparent use in the current spate of attacks could mean the secret is out. An alternative is that someone is using anthrax produced by the old US biological weapons programme that ended in 1969 - in which case the scope for further attacks could be limited. Experiments to determine which is true are underway now in the US.

This was written on the 29th of October. There have been new anthrax attacks. It seems more likely that it's the U.S. military's anthrax than naything else.

Hell for all we know it might be the U.S. military who's sending out the anthrax.

Hell, let's say that an investigator stumbled upon this and was blackmailed into resigning. That would be ver interesting.

Oh, wait. It already happened.

http://www.nydailynews.com/2001-11-18/News_and_Views/Beyond_the_City/a-132456.asp

quote:The FBI has not been spared in the shakeup. Its top deputy director, Thomas Pickard, 50, unexpectedly announced his retirement recently, citing family reasons. Pickard was point man for the FBI terror and anthrax probes.

Anybody who has been following politics knows that when an official is resigning because of "family reasons" it means that either that he is being blackmailed or doesn't want information about something to come out.

According to the above article, John Ashcroft has changed the role of the FBI from a law-enforcement agency to an anti-terrorist agency. That's right.

quote:In a matter of weeks, Ashcroft has achieved a policy transformation unlike any in decades — partly with congressional approval and partly by Ashcroft's or the President's order.

But Ashcroft hasn't stopped there. He has announced a "wartime reorganization" inside the Justice Department and FBI. Fighting terrorism has become the FBI's new "core mission," leaving local cops on their own to fight organized crime, solve bank robberies and track down drug traffickers.

Why is the media being quite critical of the government?

Simple.

If you've been paying attention to the news before September 11th, the U.S. government started jailing reporters for what they write. There was an article on this in Newsweek a week or two before September 11th.

Oh, and why should you care?

Simple. Because of the following...

http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=93086&group=webcast

This is an indymedia article analyzing the PATRIOT Act.

quote:Section 802 of HR 3162 defines domestic terrorism as "activities that - involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States:... and "appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;" or "to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;"...

Under this definition the blocking of a driveway at a federal building or defending yourself when attacked by good "Germans" at a protest march - while protesting these violations of the Constitution - could instantly make you a "domestic terrorist" and subject to some of the stiffest penalties ever enacted into law.

Oh, and there's one lead I'll be checking out. You should followi t to, see if it's true and where it leads.

Supposedly all the people who got the anthrax letters were democrats. Now, I don't like both the democrats and the republicans but if this is true it'll provide more information on the case.

this story doesn't surprise me. i do worry that i'm so cynical/world weary that nothing surprises me any more and i'm less inclined to do anything about it.....

i always thought the anthrax attacks were down to an individual american nut. but one day - perhaps - we will find out the full truth of what's been going on and all us paranoids will be proved to have at least been on the right track.

there is another thread here about where we go from here. to be honest, everyone knows that Those Who Run Our Planet are corrupt to a certain extent, but if we knew the full truth - exactly how fucked up things really are - perhaps there would be no more protests at all, just people queuing up to jump off bridges....

Lionheart - you are Spider Jerusalem.

Seriously, though, this is a bit worrying, - but I still think of it in terms of the US overreacting, rather than any deliberate, David Icke-style plan. At least, that's my interpretation of the 'transformation of the FBI into an anti-terrorist agency'. Good news for the Mafia, though - if the FBI aren't watching them, who is? They must get down on their knees and thank Allah, God and Odin for Osama bin Laden ten times a day...

This business with the bloke investigating the anthrax being made to resign is a bit more frightening, tho'...But remember that they might have fired him because there's been little progress on the anthrax investigations. Here in Britain, when we say a minister resigns 'to spend time with his family' it tends to be a polite way of saying he's resigned because he's useless...

Still something very suspicious about this whole anthrax thing, though.

I'm actually greatly relieved that lot's of the US government people are now blaming the Anthrax on domestic lone-nuts, rather than the "Iraq did it - OBVIOUSLY - load up the shotguns Billy-Bob! We can take my truck!" view that stuck around for a few days..

As with everything else in the last 100 years of American history, there's bound to be something so fishy it hurts going down, but at least they're not being too rash about it and blowing the shit out of someone.

sfd: oh you checked it out already... Well, hopefully others will check his links too.

Another aspect of all this is the bludgeoning effect of the blanket coverage the NY/US media is giving the Anthrax letters, to the extent that many people still don't know about the PATRIOT Act. (I found that out this past weekend – not about the Act itself, but how little my fellow New Yorkers know about it.) Which is exactly what Ashcroft & his cronies want. Bastard.

Congratulations on 1000 posts, Ierne! I'm on my way, myself.

yes and this is where what D says in the "Are you a terrorist" thread has validity: this whole thing has knocked all of us off our asses, and as Rosa says in the "serious" debate thread, even those who are really dedicated to antiglobalization et. al are having a hard time making effective protest. Here in the States it's like virtually non-existent (protest). That's not exactly true but certainly compared to other countries there doesn't seem to be much dissent.

It is "the great distraction", to paraphrase Bill Hicks talking about the Gulf War. And I do believe that yes all anthrax letters did go to democrats - though that could simply be attributed to some Rush Limbaugh-listening nut. I don't think the government would do this, but it certainly does work in their favor, and I'm not ruling out the possibility, that's for sure.

My gut tells me that whoever is responsible for the tainted mail is part of a long, twisted chain of command which could easily end up at the top (Ashcroft? Cheney? Who knows?). It could very well be coming from one of (the technical term for them escapes me, sorry) the radical independent militias...and who's to say the US military hasn't infiltrated many on them? Many menbers of the independent militias are ex-US military, and learned much of what they know from their period of active duty.

Certainly there's no direct order from specific polititcians or military commanders – too obvious and easily tracked.

One went to Arlen Specter (R-PA). Of course he's Jewish, which would still fit with many right-wing nutjobs.

Although, a quick look at Specter's bio shows

quote:Senator Specter has also co-sponsored key domestic violence legislation, and chairs the newly created Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight of the Department of Justice, FBI and other federal agencies

and

quote:In the only tangible legislative reform to come from the Iran-Contra scandal, he was responsible in 1989 for creating Inspectors General of the CIA, which in turn exposed Soviet mole Aldrich Ames, assassinations in Guatemala, and tainted Soviet materials passed to the President.

quote:In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba. Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.
The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.

America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

Talk about overkill. All this violence just to start a war.

It just seems relevant to the current situation.

I'm following leads given to me by Enamon.

Here's a lead in a foreign language which I can't read. I think it's german. can naybody translate?

Lionheart> that's a story about an apparent meeting between Osama bin Laden and a CIA agent in an American hospital in Dubai, culled from the French newspaper Le Figaro.

Bin Laden went to the hospital on July 4th (suffering from kidney trouble?) and left on the 14th, later - it's claimed - than would have been necessary. Along with friends and family, he enjoyed the company of CIA operative Larry Mitchell.

The CIA response to the reports? "That is totally absurd".

Brought to you by a combination of my long-considered-forgotten German and the altavista Babel Fish.

(Disclaimer - the above translation may be fatally flawed.)

This is an Indymedia article which sites

THIS ARTICLE

This is starting to sound more and more like the game Deus Ex.

Anyway, like my sociology teacher says...

The government doesn't have to follow its own laws but it creates laws to justify in the legal eye its future actions.

This is a pretty scary plan of action. Putting whole cities under Quarantine sounds kind of strange to me. I mean, what is "Quarantine"? How are you going to keep people in and out of the city?

Anyways, why is smallpox so scary? No, wait. Lemme rephrase the question:

Why aren't a lot of batches of the small pox vaccine being made? It's a pretty simple procedure involving cow pox.

Oh and if the first small pox case appears in New York I'll be turning my eye to an island 2 - 4 miles away from Manhattan's shore. This island stores all of the so-called "dead" diseases. Smallpox, anthrax (I'm assuming anthrax), probably ebola and other stuff. I know about it because 4 years ago Fox news did a special on it. Sorry if I'm not sounding very spider jerusalem like but I'm updating you as I'm gathering info. More data needs to be discovered and that will take time.
