Upon ingestion I see this rune as a man and woman linked together with both hands clasped. They are spinning and whirling around in a circle. Iteracting with one another upon a commmon desire. Humanity aids humanity.

What have you done for me lately?

Over teh last three weeks I have been coming to terms with this rune. I finally get the impression that it involves relationships, but of a more functional rather than romantic level. The relationships taht we have with other humans with regards a common cause or work. This can involve red tape and legal issues, as I have found with a recent case of Council mistakes and uncoimmunicated court rulings.

One thing that maybe sums up my experiences with this rune is what I call fleshy hats. A fleshy hat is when a seated person slings an arm over their head, with it resting there. A double fleshy hat is when both arms end up rested upon the crown of the head. I witnessed this with a friend the other day and realised how the upright arms from the shoulder to the elbow, and the crossed fore arms ressembled the Mannaz rune. This summery notes the body language that this position describes, one of relaxation with others, security and feelings of safety, but also one of voluntary vunerability, exposing the area around the armpit.

My DNA creates a sympathetic resonance with other human DNA

Rune of the Month links this one to Bifrost, the rainbow bridge, as well.

Says "Man" is the beginning of the quest -- description sounds something like the Magician in the tarot.

OK, so you've got "Man" (Midgard) in this kind of central position, with gods up and giants below -- is that right?

Something about this rune's description makes me think of that Vedic Hindu schema, with heavenly abodes and hells up and down from this world. I suppose it's true for any cosmology made by humans.

I'm curious about how this rune intersects with that. It seems to be about connections and about centeredness -- why isn't it in the center of the futhark? Or even the beginning? It seems like such a logical starting point.

So-o-o-orta... I'm not sure that "Giants below" is quite right (leaving aside the thorny issue of whether Giant is that great a translation, blah blah blah). When Thor goes off on his Jotun-bashing expeditions, he's usually described as heading East--Jotunheim lies East of the void around Midgard. Muspellheim where the fire-Giants live is off to the South of Midgard. Nifelheim lies North and down, of course, but even though that's a realm of ice it is not where the frost-Giants live (they seem to hang out in Jotunheim).

Down is where Hel has her domain, though, and between Helheim and Midgard we find Svartalfheim, the realm of the dark Elves. (Not evil and not actually dark in any physical sense, they just live underground.) In Hel's realm itself we find Nastrond, where the wicked get turned into a running buffet for wolves and dragons. So yeah, places for the dead are down, although only Nastrond really fits the usual image of a "Hell": a place of punishment and monsters.

As for Mannaz and its place in the Futhark... I dunno, I think it makes a certain amount of sense. It is in the middle of Tyr's aett, for a start, and there's something satisfying about the rune for Man standing where it does: between the Horse and the Lake, between the energetic drives of the animal and the deep waters of the Mysteries.
