Uncanny X-Men goes full-on manga

According to Newsarama, manga artist Kia Asamiya will become the new full-time artist on Uncanny X-Men, which will be written by Chuck Austen.

Will this experiment work? Is one of the top American comics ready to embrace manga full-on a few years after Joe Madureira flirted with the style in the 90s? I know this style of art is popular among kids who are growing up on this style of art, so this might be a great way to attract a younger audience. I think it's a bold chance to make, and will do something to make Uncanny seem distinct from the New and X-Treme X-Men comics. I honestly find this guy's artwork to be pretty lousy, though.

I know nothing of this Chuck Austen. I think the important thing to ask is are his scripts likely to work to the artist's strengths?

The second most important thing to ask being: are his scripts likely to be much cop full stop? 'Cause Uncanny under Joe Casey didn't display much of the 'new Marvel' bumf that I've been hearing so much about.

I've not read anything by Chuck Austen besides flipping through the awful War Machine comic in a shop. Based on his resume, which includes Marvel's new fire fighter comic, and some interviews, I've no reason to believe that he's anything more than mediocre.

I've got no real comment to make about either the writer or the artist (I'm not familiar with either of them), but I do think it's great that Marvel are willing to try stuff like this. Yeah, it might fall flat on its face and get laughed at, but it's an interesting risk to take with one of their flagship titles.

See, why on Earth didn't they hire someone like this to do the Marvel Mangaverse stuff?? As far as I've seen they have all these dreadful American manga wannabes and not a single genuine manga artist in the bunch.

I don't understand the decisions made sometimes, I really don't...

us war machine was cool as all shit. high-paced pulp of the first order with guns tits and sensitive issues, it was a quid and it came out every week for fuck's sake! austen's art in it is heavy manga, he appears to understand the complex dynamics involved involved when fitting it to a superhero comic. i reckon this new guy's stuff looks great and i'm looking forward to getting another xmen comic now

I totally disagree here - i got the first three issues of USwarmachine for free and STILL felt ripped off - sensative isses? issues of race were delt with with all the sensativity of a sledge hammer. Still it could be worse, Austin could be drawing as well as writing.

Full-on manga? Does that mean we'll be subjected to panel after panel of speed lines, no text, and big-eyed heroes staring vacantly at the villain of the month.

Going off on a complete tangent, has anyone else picked up Vertigo's Tokyo? I was just wondering if I'm the only one who thinks the beautifully stylised art (kind of 'Franky Quitely does manga in pastels') was let down by the "Japanese people - are they wacky or what?" vibe of the script.

Yeah.. I picked it up...

overall a fun read... where's everyone's nose!?!?

I was amazed by Seth Fischer's art in Toyko - the story was just sort of besides the point. This guy is fucking jaw-dropping. I want more.

Anyway, here's a taste of Asamiya's X-Men work...

A Liefeld-ish non-blue Archangel.

A cookie-cutter manga girl version of Husk.

An unregcognizable version of Northstar.

A pretty by-the-book drawing of The Juggernaut.

So I guess they are throwing the "X-Men don't dress like superheroes anymore" thing right out the window, huh?

That's just preliminary art, right? I really hope those aren't the final designs. Angel's nose is far too large for his head and there's something really odd about his chin. Since when has Northstar been an X-man and why does he look like Racer X?

Here's some of the others...
Iceman

and

Nightcrawler

. . . errr . . .

Iceman and Nightcrawler look a little better, if just cos they are still using the Churchill/Quitely redesign. I just don't understand the Archangel thing - why does he look like Ka-Zar with wings? How did he get so buff? He should be roughly the same build as Iceman, only a bit taller.

Northstar briefly joined the X-Men during the short Scott Lobdell run between Claremont's second go on the title, and Grant's New X-Men. Northstar is one of the second-string characters that Austen will be using in his X-Men, along with Husk (from Generation X), The Juggernaut, and Havok. Austen also plans on using a lot of the lame-o characters from the Lobdell 90s run.

I know Northstar joined the X-men between Claremont and Morrison's run. I just thought that was a temporary deal though.

We're not going to see any more characters from that particular "team" are we? They were all kind of pathetic.

I think Northstar makes a lot of sense - he is 100% an X-Men character, after all. Northstar goes all the way back to the Claremont/Byrne era.

I also think it's good to finally have an out-of-the-closet gay X-Man, even if it's an annoying vain character like Northstar. Note that the other two characters most often thought to be gay in subtext (Nightcrawler and Iceman) are also in the cast. And there's only one girl...

so... anyone have anything to say about Chuck Austin's writting?

Nightcrawler and Iceman? Gay? I think people may be reading into things a bit too much.

Since there's an out-of-the-closet gay on the roster now, are Beast and Northstar going to have a little discussion sometime down the road?

It's kind of disappointing that we won't be seeing more of Chamber and Stacy. I'd really like Chamber to be used more; he's got so much potential.

Read Uncanny this week - don't usually, wanted to check out the beginning of Austin's run - story was sentimental but likeable, dialogue was snappy and fun if not great, ideas were a little thin on the ground.

Not bad, not great, didn't pay for it, so don't care.

Asamiya's art, however, has no place in this book if the first issue is anything to go by. Preposterons have no place in the kind of intimate team book that Austin would seem to be trying to create. Jesus, Angel looks like something out of fucking Tekken with his special helmet hair-do and loin-cloth.

Frankly, mainstream comic-books could do without returning to the inarticulate, ostentatious art styles of the nineties, when constapation ruled and characterisation could never hope to out-do super-posing.

To think I had such hopes for this little venture.

There's always been a lot of gay subtext to Nightcrawler's character, especially with his relationship to Wolverine in Claremont's original run.

I've never thought of Iceman as being particular homoerotic, but I know a lot of other people do.

Looking at those images, I can see very little difference between their style and that of all the X-books (save Generation X) circa Onslaught.

Bought the latest Uncanny... with the exception of a charming appearance of Charles with a cane... it was mostly LAME!!!
