Well, got round to watching my video this afternoon, impressed with a pretty sympathetic piece, well-handled and just shows C4s schizophrenic (sorry 'Nesh) tendency to veer between really good and thoughtful programs and the lowest common denominator shit they can put out like Graham Norton and Big Brother.
For those that didn't see, it's basically about 4 different people, one a mid-forties father-of-three barrister who is about to have an op to give him a penis, a 24 year old who has his breasts removed (mastectomy or something?) and two slightly younger guys, one of whom is about to start on the hormones while the other is having difficulty getting his gender clinic to believe he is a man and not a fucked-up dyke. The only way they can transition is on the NHS, but while a private psychiatrist evaluates him and is satisfied that he genuinely needs to transition the NHS aren't so sure.
I thought it was a pretty good program, very 'safe' and 'uncontroversial' and, as I said, resisted the urge to veer into Channel 4 tasteless melodrama mode. I'll prolly tape the others so might be able to arrange a swap thing if others want to see it. |
