Don't have all the details to hand, but there's a Channel 4 documentary tomorrow evening, following four transmen in different stages of transition. It's the first of a short series, I think, and looks like handling the subject reasonably sensitively. That and I know at least one of the individuals concerned...

Anyway, I'll probably be recording the programme, so interested parties might want to say so here.

Dopes that mean you want me to record it, Beloved, since your facilities down there are fairly substandard?

Good preview on Mark Lawson's programme on Radio 4 last night, whetted my appetite. For interested parties, 21.00 to 22.00, C4, Wednesday 31st July, and here's the C4 blurb.

Oops, boss just came in and caught me at this. Have explained it away as research for my Cultural Awareness Programme...

Ooh yes, if you could record it too, that'd be good. I guess I'm aware that certain potentially interested parties live outside the UK but might be interested in seeing this, if it's any good.

Honestly, you two should live together or something...

I've forgot to set the blimmin' video but I look 4wd to hearing what you 'Loids make of it. One of those TS's was on C5's Future Sex about a fortnight ago. I'd start intelligent debate about it but I was three sheets to the wind when I watched it and recall very little about it.

Wasn't that Future Sex actually a late night Channel 4 thing? If t'were then I saw that and thought okay, fair enough although the presenter didn't want (or didn't feel able) to get involved with actually asking the guy about his particular choices. Why were the only men he was interested in transmen?

And remember, if you are buying things to put in other people's bottoms, don't start of with big things.

Well, unpopular as the two-year Life Test (living and working within the chosen gender role for a set period of time, aided by prescribed hormones but pre-reassignment surgery) is, these are some of the questions it seeks to address...

At work, so didn't see the programme - but the lovely ZoCher has recorded it for me.

You're right Lada, 'twas C4. I think there was an episode of it last night as well.

Well, got round to watching my video this afternoon, impressed with a pretty sympathetic piece, well-handled and just shows C4s schizophrenic (sorry 'Nesh) tendency to veer between really good and thoughtful programs and the lowest common denominator shit they can put out like Graham Norton and Big Brother.

For those that didn't see, it's basically about 4 different people, one a mid-forties father-of-three barrister who is about to have an op to give him a penis, a 24 year old who has his breasts removed (mastectomy or something?) and two slightly younger guys, one of whom is about to start on the hormones while the other is having difficulty getting his gender clinic to believe he is a man and not a fucked-up dyke. The only way they can transition is on the NHS, but while a private psychiatrist evaluates him and is satisfied that he genuinely needs to transition the NHS aren't so sure.

I thought it was a pretty good program, very 'safe' and 'uncontroversial' and, as I said, resisted the urge to veer into Channel 4 tasteless melodrama mode. I'll prolly tape the others so might be able to arrange a swap thing if others want to see it.
