This was gonna be a selfish thread in which I requested one specific kind of book. But then I thought we could just keep it in reserve in case anyone wanted a book recommendation in future.

My request, to kick things off:

I want a book on the symbolism of numbers, from as broad and cross-cultural an angle as possible. It needs to be exhaustive and not go into the crappy airy-fairy shite that a lot of these books do. Preferably dealing with sacred geometry as well, although I'll settle for a book on each subject. Something to stand on the shelf next to Man and His symbols. If anyone recommends shite and I buy it I'm coming to you for the refund, punk.

There. Not at all demanding, am I?

I keep looking at The Key to it All by David Allen Hulse myself, though I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. In two volumes he explores the links between number systems, alphabets, and magickal systems across the globe. He breaks it up into two volumes, one for east and one for west. If that doesn't have what you're looking for in it, I don't know what would. It looks very promising, though more than I have time to digest right now, personally.

I would second that. Key to it all Vol 1 and 2 are probably the most exhaustive works available.

They look outstanding. A definite purchase when I can afford them. Thanks.

Here's another request. Gnostics. Any really great books?

I was about to reccommend the Gnostic Gospils, then realized they were the Nag Hammadi Rex already mentioned. If you want Gnosticism, a fine start is the original works. I don't know of any good modern interpretations, unfortunately.

Briefly:
The Gnostic webpage www.enemies.com has a pretty
good reading list. Oh, and there’s a copy of the
Nag Hammadi online as well….

Gnosis and the Nag Hammadi Library just arrived today. I've also picked up a little second-hand hardback on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I plan to immerse myself in scripture as soon as I've finished Richard Wilhelm's translation of the I-Ching.

On that subject, do people rate this translation? I'm a wee bit concerned that it was translated from German into English, as opposed to the English text being taken from the original source. Anyone here an expert?

It's a brilliant translation. I can't say I've read all the other translations out there, but I've never felt the need. I think Wilhelm had a real feel for the spirit of the book - there may be other translations from the good to the hideous (I Ching for lovers - puke - or the "business friendly" versions!! - but not many people spent over 20 years in China, or worked with first hand with an old school Chinese scholar. I think some of the different translations may well be excellent and provide many insights and new angles on the various texts, but I've always thought how much can I absorb at any one time?
I've never noticed any problems with the Chinese-German- English thing, but I can't read German so who knows?
There's a Richard Wilhelm page here
http://www.schoolofwisdom.com/wilhelm.html
and there's an accompanying book of essays by Wilhelm and his son, which is well worth having a look at, and proves the depths of Wlhelm's feeling and insight into the text.

OK, now I want Enoch.

That came out wrong.

I want the whole thing, however, not just excerpts. Is the translation by R H Charles complete, and is it the best version?

I really like my New Revised Standard. For anything study oriented I use online resources, which are pretty good on the most part.

I like the NIV translation. Especially their new TNIV translation of the new testament.

What's NIV? Ta for the advice, I'm thinking about getting one modern and one ancient- I'm mostly interested in how it has changed over the years, differences between old testament and new etc.
Reflect- is the New Revised Standard expensive as a rule?

Seth
10:41 / 04.06.03
Nope. I think mine cost around £20.

I prefer the language of the Authorised Version (that's the King James one) - or Tyndale, but a lot of Tyndale was used for the Authorised as well. But I must admit that that is an opinion based on my literary preferences and has nothing to do with clarity, &c.

For anyone familiar with Enoch: is this the complete text, or just the first two chapters? (click the link to see)

Help would be appreciated:

One of my bestest bestest mates wants a book for her birthday. She doesn't know the title or author, but says that it's about how the phases of the moon effect people.

Now I can imagine there's quite a few books on the subject, and that they're mostly rather fluffy. So the request is to recommend one or more, the less fluffy the better.

I was wondering if anyone knows the title of a book I partially read many moons ago...about 15 years, called something like 'Robotech'/'Cybertech'
From memory, it talks about humans being spiritual machines and the magical/techno side of that...a bit like Mondo 2000, meeting William Gibson, meeting 'fluffy's guide to angels'.
hope my memory is a least a bit sound, but am getting no clues surfing the e-shops, so thanks if anyone can help.

moonweaver: could it have been Angel Tech: A Modern Shamans Guide to Reality Selection, by Antero Alli? "...a survival manual for fallen angels who are through with their frozen responses to the nightmares around us." Memory jog: the book is broken down into Elementary and High School grades (i.e. Leary's 8 circuits). Sound like the one?

ahh Lepidoteran, many great blessings to you...
thought I was going insane about it actually existing, since I distantly remember naively buying it as a young teenager, reading a few pages and then passing it on to a beautiful lady where it disappeared.
I didn't, and still don't, know anything about Leary's 8 circuits but have always thought that I had to read this book....I just hope it not as smarmy as I think it might be.
thanks again

I'm hearing a lot of talk about Leary's 8-circuit model of conciousness (sp?). What is it exactly? (I don't need a book recommendation, a link to a decent definition would do)
