Any kiss-kiss bears for the queer Tory?

Apparently they're an open and fun loving party because they've got one openly gay MP, though I think that the rest of the country may disagree. What should we expect now, IDS shaking his hand and saying "Look! I didn't catch the gay plague!"? How about promoting a token Asian to the front bench? Or getting rid of all but one of their women MPs in the Shadow Cabinet? And let's see what his constituents say before wondering whether the Conservatives are new and worthy of huggles.

heard something on the radio today about how this means he's a shoe-in (whatever that means) for a job/position/candidacy.
Now that definitely IS tokenism.

I get the impression IDS is the sort of person who uses the line "don't get me wrong... some of my best friends are gay/black/asian/whatever" quite a lot.

Well, the Tories used to wheel out their token Black peer in Hague's time to show they were multicultural, until he accused them of being a racist party.

Which raises the question: how long will it be until a token gay tory MP is outed as straight, who was merely pretending to be gay to get a better position?

Wasn't Portillo doing that with his 'I'm bi, me' claim?!

I get the impression IDS is the sort of person who uses the line "don't get me wrong... some of my best friends are gay/black/asian/whatever" quite a lot.

I do recall a splendid Private Eye cover upon which he declared, "Some of my best friends are blackshirts," after one of his mob was outed as a BNP boy.

On the subject of Portillo's gay past. Portillo had a reputation, throughout the ninties, amongst those that worked in the media, for being actively gay.
Anecdotally, me Mum used to use a (posh) taxi firm contracted to the independent (television) production company she worked for at the time. Her regular driver, a sort disinclined to lie or even exaggerate, swore blind that Portillo regularly canoodled with fellas in the back of his cab.
