Panel To Call For National ID Cards

Big Brother will be watching and he wants you to pay for it!
quote:The senator said the universal identification card system would utilize high-tech microchips storing digitized fingerprints, facial characteristics and retinal images.

Goodman said the panel had not yet decided if the ID card system should be mandatory or voluntary, but that in his opinion a mandatory system would “maximize safety and security.”

Goodman said the cards would be available to all residents and visitors to the United States. He said those that could afford it would be charged a fee for the cards.

Bastards! They completely changed the article. The article was originally all about the idea of ID cards, what they would include and what it might cost. Now they mention it in passing and go on to other security issues. It was also twice as long before. Censorship or just a newspaper editing itself?

National ID cards have been around in the US since 1937. They're called social security cards.

Now, if you'll excuse me, its time for my Anti-Sex League meeting.

That's the article from which you quoted.

And Clark, social security cards are not ID cards. When somebody asks you for your ID do you pull out your social security card? no, you don't. why? it's not a valid form of ID. It's, at best, a tracking number.

Read the article. This is totally different.

Ahh...Thanks Lion. They must've just moved it from the top headlines section is all.

It sounds like they'll market it as something which will make traveling easier, like swipe card parking meters.
I can see it now at the airport: "Just swipe your card, look in the retina scan, scan your fingerprint and give us a stool sample and we'll know you're an american citizen, just walk on through!"

Didn't see weblinks to it but there's a feature on ID cards in the latest Wired that hit the shelves. Shows the features on a current Italian national card in production. Also lists some of the countries currently considering using these methods...
