When intelligent people say life is just like 'The Matrix'...

Has anyone seen the latest New Scientist? It's not up on-line unfortunately, but there's an article positing that we really are living in a futureworld computer simulation of 'present times', the guy claims that is' just as possible as 'really' living here now. Then disagrees with someone else (of course), about whether this is good or bad and survival techniques if he's right (he says basically, go on as you were, another guy says we should pretend to be ignorant so the universal Sys-Op doesn't delete us).

If someone would be evil enough to stick up the article, or post the link I noticed at the end of the article but foolishly forgot to take note of, I think that would help.

Other than give those two teenagers more ammunition for their bizarre spamming, what do people think of this? Do we need to employ Occam's razor here? And in the two opposing viewpoints which i hope I've managed to accurately summarise, are we not seeing the classical science='knowledge' vs. religion='ignorance' argument?

It's essentially the same thing as asking if God exists. Questioning fundamental assumptions: if our perceptions are being fooled, then, well, you can't trust them, right?

Subjectively, does it matter? Unless the difference in world view can cause a discernable change (like the sysop deleting you or something), it is of no matter to us. Just another metaphore to describe the basic mechanics of reality.

Nick Bostrom did something on this:

http://www.simulation-argument.com/

'ABSTRACT. This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a "posthuman" stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the transhumanist dogma that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed.'

The idea that we inhabit a computer simulation is just as valid as the idea of a 'one true christian god', Philip K Dick's '2 Source Cosmogony', Morrison's 'time crystal' stuff, etc. Attempts to explain the unexplainable...

Its fine for me, no problem, I've heard lots of crap since I was born. Now this kid says the world is being run by our ancestors, okay, and concludes that we should all be doing what self-help books and gurus say we should do, and the analogical extension he makes of our ancestors makes me blush, and I think he's been watching too many movies.

Bostrom's arguement rests on the premise that posthumans think a giant earth simulation is a worthwhile and ethical endeavor. This seems like a pretty big leap to me, considering that one of the basic ideas in Transhumanism is that we have absolutely no idea what a posthuman will be like.

Definitely, Thjatsi. His assumptions are very linear. And he also watches E!Entertainment a lot.

I just found it odd that he want's it taken as a given that any future posthuman society is going to be obsessed by it's past and run continual simulations of it. I mean, what would be the point?

A complex history program. A reservation. A zoo. I mean really, why do we keep mummies in air tight tanks?
