Right there with ya, MC.

I keep coming up with odd scenarios. That this is all a test to see if, when put in a crisis, the calibre of discussion changes at all.

I guess we'll know relatively soon, either way.

It's just that I've been archiving threads all over and I don't know what to leave. I could be here all night.

Hmm...I've been hesitant to post this question for fear of receiving a pelting of "How many times does this have to be explained...?" replies, but here goes, since this seems like a good space for it:

What's going on?

I've been absent for a while, and I've tried to catch up by reading incredibly long threads about He Who Shall Remain Suitless, but the missing posts rendered the meaning all craggy and cratered. What's the straight dope? Has the Troll managed to bring this place down? I thought the sky wasn't supposed to fall until December 22, 2012. Or at least until SkyNet goes online, or some other twee nonsense.

Help out the confused...?

Libertine: wander into The Policy and click on the 'Spin Doctoring' thread; scroll down nine or ten posts to Deric Holloway's one and follow the link. You should find a (deleted) thread entitled 'Shutting down Barbelith' which will explain everything.

Once you've read it, destroy it.

I honestly think we need more time. There's plenty of people who post here regularly, but less than once a week.

I hate to seem too casual about this, but I really cant see it happening. maybe Im in a bit of denial, but this is a really great place that I cant see ever being sucessfully recreated. nor do I think such an attempt should be made.

its not going anywhere. and thats my final say on the matter

The Captain saith: I keep coming up with odd scenarios.

As do I.

Because if Tom were really going to nuke the place, he'd send out an e-mail to all board-members, as he done in the past... right?

And given that we've had the occasional suit-hack in the past and that A Certain Someone was all smug last week about his spare suits and saying that "I've got one that will just amaze you," or somesuch (can't remember the exact quote, and I think the post has been deleted)...

...and with no direct confirmation or denial from our Tom and no directmention of the "incident" on his big gay weblog...

I don't know. If I think about it too hard, I get that Donald-Sutherland-in-Invasion-of-the-Body-Snatchers feeling.

deep cleansing breath

I see. Thanks for the directions.

Well, then...let me just say Thanks to everyone who talked me down last September 11. I came on here ranting, so topsy-turvy that I was going against everything I'd spent the last ten years trying to exhort. I still get choked up thinking about the firm words, and then acceptance of my apologies, on that day and in the days following.

Will it be a sudden 404 or will the forums fade out one-by-one?

Well, as others have pointed out, it may not happen at all. Tom's actions since that thread have been ambiguous, and he may well be in a state of indecision himself.

Or perhaps replaced by a screaming man-pod.

Someone was circumspect enough to point out that if this place does pull a Hindenburg, conspiracy theories will abound.

How's this for a suitably implausible theory:

Tom started the Closing Down thread as a cunning rouse to get rid of Andrew by making him realise he was endangering the very existance of the board and should thus give it a rest.

Naaah.. that would just be silly, but I wish it were true..

Ganesh
20:13 / 25.07.02
Rizla, that theory would presuppose the existence of reasoning sentience in the mind of the Knodger.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, Rizla. But that would entail HeWhoCannotBeNamed being able to take a hint. Which I don't see happening anytime soon, unfortunately.

Y'know, Jack, the lack of any mention in his blog is indeed an odd thing. However, if it was a matter of his suit being hacked, you'd think he would have e-mailed everyone in that case too.

Now my nerves are tattered and confused.

The only clue one way or another I can discern is a post on plasticbag yesterday asking for advice on moderation techniques.

Dare I be hopeful?

Not really, especially if he's just exhausted with the whole business.

Noticed that Ellis (not our Ellis) also posted AC's home phone, mobile phone, and 3 email addresses. It's almost like he was inviting people to harrass the poor dear. Which we are all too grown up to do, of course, because he isn't worth it. Ahem.

Gawd. I've been having a crisis of conscience about posting this, but what with the lack of any solid information it may help to shed a little light on our current situation.

Tom's been on the board today, performing a couple of minor moderator functions. I think it's fairly safe to say that he wouldn't have bothered with them if the place was going to be demolished in the immediate future.

Off now to wring my hands some more.

"This is an infection.

We need to cut off some limbs."

How the hell are we going to do this, when the one gangrenous limb everyone wants off keeps growing back? Or do I not understand the metaphor?
