I've had a couple of these recently. The latest one was today. It's 148k, but toally blank. Am I right in thinking that some prat is sending me viruses?

Wouldn't a virus email contain an attachment of some sort?

Well, as I understand it, yes. But it's totally blank-- no message, nothing-- and yet it's 148k. Hence much WTF?

I've been getting these too - probably about half a dozen in the last month or so, all from different sources. No attachments but high k. I'm not sure what to make of it at all.

Oh, bollocks.

THIS worm (Nimda) WILL infect your computer if you a) go to an infected web page or b) allow Internet Explorer to run the html and java scrip code infected pages contain in some other way, like in the preview pane of microsoft outlook and outlook express email programs. NO USER INTERACTION IS REQUIRED. INFECTION IS AUTOMATIC

Ive gotten them, too - but only to my hotmail account. I delete almost everything I dont immediately recognize (hence me putting as much info as to my identity than can possibly be normal in every email to anyone new)

Short term solution: download patches for Outlook / OE / IE. Turn off previewing.

Medium term solution: stop using virus-prone Microsoftware. It's not just anti-Bill prejudice that gets people to use Opera, Mozilla etc... IE and Outlook are full of holes and people love to exploit them. (There are other good user reasons to change, too, which I'd be happy to expand on.)

Well, if I had my druthers I'd be flying a Mac, but this is Lurid's computer really and he gets to choose the software.

These sound like the one's I was getting a few months back.

If the info. above is correct, I'm fucking glad I only looked at them on University computers..

There are one or two free virus checkers now that will screen your email- try here.

If you do have nimda, there's a fix at

http://www.mcafee.com/support/onlineservices/faqs.asp?search=nimda&x=22&y=6

They seem to work well - managed to get klez off a network not too long ago. I've had four random seeming infected mails within the last fortnight, which might not seem too dastardly but I never get viruses sent normally.

If I've pissed anyone off here, it was probably an accident.

I've been getting shitloads of them in my hotmail [whoremail more like it], the last time I was checking my mails regularly. I don't open them I just delete 'em. Some were from Irish jobsites I had signed up to. Automated advertising and bollocks. Some were just dodgy.
This is weird though, my brother got two mails that should have been sent to me. His email address is completely unrelated so there would not have been a silly mistake. If it was a pay account I would be pissed. As it is, it is very strange and I suspect someone has been fucking with my account. Or maybe using a directory or something [same surname].
Haven't seen any further problems yet.

drzener,

Nope your situation isn't unusual at all, and I'm willing to bet that your email address is stored in his address book, or vice-versa.
Its almost certainly the work of a Kak-Worm or one of its variants. The worm goes through your addresses, sending out random mails to random recipients. Some variants bounce an incoming mail to you to one of your address book listings.
I've never used Norton, but Naked Flame has put up a link to AVG - an incredibly powerful (and free) virus checker - so you may want to download a copy of that onto your system.
Oh, an incidentally, never ever ever ever ever ever ever use Outlook or Outlook Express. They are very badly coded and full of more holes than swiss cheese (so much so that the Kak-Worm viruses were even designed to use Outlook to spread themselves). I suspect the email designed for you which ended up in your brother's account was sent out by a machine running Outlook, so - if you know the person in question - you may want to send a polite email advising them to check their system.
