Where can I find a good winter coat?

In August, I'll be moving to a place where winter is a serious thing, and may be spending a great deal of time on a campus built like a wind tunnel. I'm trying to find a new winter coat, wool or wool-like, full length, and preferably something kind of Edwardian looking, though that's a long shot. I could really use some places to look online, if anyone knows them, since most searches for "winter coat" come back with the info on the fur coats of itty bitty animals (fortunately still attached. But I'm not a marmot.)

Where are you moving, Maz? If you want a really warm coat, you could try Lands End or the like; but these are the down coats that will make you look like a walking sleeping bag. But warm!

It's too tiring for me to wear a big winter coat. My strategy is to wear lots of light layers, the undermost layer being a kind of long underwear called CuddlDuds. So then I can wear my fall coat all through the winter.

And remember, it will be all for naught if you don't wear a hat.

There's a *really* good coat available in the Barbelith Closing Down Sale...

On-line? Sorry...the only place I can guide you to is Minneapolis Vintage Clothing stores. This is the time of year when they have the BEST coats, simply because it's the middle of summer, and people are selling off their old ones, forgetting that winter does come back. Or maybe hoping that they will be moving by October.

Fools. No one ever leaves Minneapolis. Not even Prince.

What's wrong with thrift stores, huh??

Have you tried eBay? I've got a friend who has an online vintage clothing shop on eBay... very gothic.

Wear a large thick warm blanket. Use it to cover your head. Use it to cover your friends. Use it to cover your hands.
Blankets are exceptional things.

-sentimental rotting of own thread- I love you all so much and if this place does shut down I will very probably cry. -end of sentimental rotting of own thread-

Persephone- I am moving to a wee town thirty minutes outside of Albany "No Goddamnit we're the capital Hat-age will not be a problem. I am no stranger to the crochet hook and have already whipped up a hooded scarf for myself. I am too short and not-skinny to wear a down coat without looking like anything other than a squat little pillow, which is tragic, since I think that sounds like a very pleasant thing to be indeed.

Tannhauser- Hey, if that coat fits, I'd wear it, cause I hear it's a really great coat.

Solitaire- I don't know if I can make it out to Minneapolis, but I'll look.

Grant- I'm on my way over post-haste, and there's nothing wrong with thrift stores, but my beloved parents may spring for this as a graduation gift, so I can actually afford something with a price over a single digit.

Vadrice- They sure are. But I'm the clumsiest person alive- I'd try to walk up some stairs and be a whole bag of bruised.

I will take these suggestions and run with them. And hopefully I won't trip. : )

I don't know about anywhere online, but have you thought about military surplus stores? Some of the cold weather coats offered in places that sell military surplus are quite cozy looking.

Military surplus is my next stop as soon as I can get a day off work. My old winter coat is Swedish military issue, but it's terribly threadbare and full of holes. I think I may try to track down something Russian this time.

Here's one for sale. The seller appears to be very highly rated.

There's more here and here and especially here and here*.

I don't think that's a good idea. I'm going to just sit quietly and not think about it.

But you know you want to. And let me tell you, that coat was probably the least of the treasures I found. It was a hard choice between that and the undeniable peices of evidence indicating that yetis not only exist but love gettin' funky and routinely break it down like they wuz mad at somethin'. I'm not even gonna tell you what I saw in the box marked "things Johnny should never, ever see".
