I followed The Bomb from 2.15 or so onwards for annotations and links to fun stuff. About 2 years ago I emailed an annotation to Tom and he emailed back and told me to check out this bit. Damn I'm glad I did.

Stumbled across Invisibles a year ago or so, Googled "barbelith", looking for meaning, with predictable consequence. "Poor Web-fu made me smarter", or I would have used Dictionary.com.

Still looking for meaning.

1)Was looking for info on a brazilian surf-rock band called "Go!"
2)Got a list of sites, first site had a link to the Bomb (I hadn't even read The Invisibles yet, though I had heard of it).
3)Then I found the 'Lith, posted an amusingly stupid post in the Magick, got solemnely ignored, backtracked a little bit and got addicted to the place. Then I got cured and now I know I can stop whenever I want, ok?

And I think to myself, how did I get here? This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife.

Rothkoid made me. He'd been going on about it for ages, but I'd never been much of a net person. Then when I got a grown-up job which had net access, I finally checked it out, promptly became addicted and lurked for quite a while. Then when someone dissed one of my favourite books I finally posted something, then tried to crawl back into my hole, but it was no longer my home and I had to stay here.

Rothkoid made me. Barbelith undid me.

Someone posted me a link to something an ex of mine had written, which led to me obsessively checking everything said person had ever written on the internet ever to see if there were any references to me. Somewhere along the way there was a link to a site which linked to plasticbag.org, which thankfully distracted me from my insane stalking and, especially once I followed up on the barbelith links, gave me new people to stalk! Hoorah!

Um, no, that wasn't it. It was a terribly intellectual journey involving a completely serene acceptance of everything in my past. Yup, that's the one. I'll fill in the details later

In one synchronistic week, I was led to the webzine by two very different google searches. One took me to Lothar Tuppan's "Shamanism in a nutshell" article. Another took me to Lee Ravitz’s “Morrison's debt to Moorcock.”

After the second hit, I decided to take a look around and see what this place was all about. I found that I couldn't resist joining in on a conversation about what literary characters you'd like to fuck.

Casting couch, sore arse, usual thing...

Then had internet access at work and needed to vent where there was a grown up discussion after 9/11.

Then Ganesh moved to London and it became another way of stalking him.

Then I fell in love with the 'Lith.

A friend of mine from my old net haunt is the brother of Jay Babcock, and he told me about Babcock's site, knowing that I am a big fan of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol. This was back when Barbelith was still the Nexus - I signed up a few times, but never posted and only occasionally read the board, because I have this weird message board monogamy thing going on, I was still committed to the other board. I kept reading Tom's Plasticbag blog in the meantime. After deciding to leave my old board for good, I decided to give Barbelith a try out to replace the net community void. I've been regularly posting here since February of 2001.

Mid-1997, I think. Whenever #16 or so of v.2 came out. Was posting a bit on the DC Comics message boards and someone posted a link to the Nexus from the Invisibles forum there. I lurked a bit, posting once or twice until I got my feet wet, and then jumped in and didn't look back.

Zoom.

I'd been pronouncing it "tree house".

And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

Most people do. I just think try-jay-us rolls of the tongue easier and I'm kind of frightened by the idea of people visualizing me as an intelligent tree with a house in my branches.

Oh dear. Three years ago when I moved to this here city, I had bought what Invissies anthologies there were. (There was one, or two, was there? My mind wanders.) Became deeply interested in the thought processes and concepts involved therein because they were so close to my own personal thoughts and beliefs. Intrigued, to say the least.

Posted on the Nexus a month or so later. Never looked back. Was entirely grateful to meet a group of people who shared the same mindset. Insinuated myself as a sort of web tart, but never to be outdone by Miss Macavity.

I am grateful to Tom and this whole thing because I got to meet a lot of you and I think the world of you all.

Will end almost sappy post now.

there's something poetic about a tree house that wants to be a squirrel....

Hm. I wonder what comes up if I enter "barbelith" into a search engine? Golly, the Bomb has everything Invisibles I was looking for. Wait, what's this message board thingy? Hm, there's a magick forum. Maybe I'll lurk around a bit.

That's more or less it for me. I lurked on and off for about a year before I actually started posting. Now its the first place I go when work gets slow, which is often...

Funny, I'd been pronouncing it as "apples".

Found a copy of Invisibles vol.3 #1 during fall of 2000 and thought "sweet, I've wanted to check this series out, and now I can get in on the ground floor," which was so wrong it was funny. There was a plug for the site, and I checked it out. Been here since. It was the first internet message board I ever posted on, and it remains the only one I have any real interest in.

Via Lurid. Amongst other good things, he's the one that introduced me to decent comics. When we first met, the Invisibles was still in its early stages; I noticed the link but we didn't have an internet connection then. I joined the board roughly a year ago; in all that time I've never found anywhere like it.

Not really. I've just gotten sick of all the squirrels crapping all over me. Oh yes, if I ever figure out how to turn my tree-like body into that of a squirrel, I will have my revenge. And it will be sweet.

My friend's ex-boyfriend's website had a link on it. I'd been online for seven years and Barbelith as a site was by far the most intelligent place I'd ever visited. It made me stay awhile, take it in a little, so nice to visit somewhere with bright people who could talk plain for once.
