Ambient Music Minus Whales

Remember, no fucking whales.

For that matter, no fucking breakbeats.

Okay, I hope we're all on the same wavelength.

So here I am listening to Harold Budd's Gypsy Violin for the Nth time, and I'm wondering what else there is to discover in the world of ambient music.

I'm pretty familiar with most of the big names - Eno, Budd, Fripp, Hassell etc...

Lustmord. Definitely. Think of ambient that's been locked in a room with naught but dodgy LSD and some Elder Gods. Creepy stuff, but not too far off-base from something like Eno's On Land, say.

Intransitive Recordings have some good stuff: the Hudak/Lescalleet album is fucking gold.

Also, I'd suggest checking out The Necks's latest album, Aether. It's fairly enoesque, though I think it's one of their weaker: you might want to give Sex a go... more minimalist than ambient, though.

Hey - why don't you give some tips, acksherly? I know little past Eno in terms of canonical ambient. I'm assuming you know Bryars, say?

This is a really old topic I've unearthed but if you're into ambience or drone check out Jonathan Coleclough's 'period' LP and anything by Mirror or Organum. Beautiful stuff.
