I put calls out concerning an acquaintance of mine who lives in Rockaway, so I'm sort of on tenterhooks waiting for a callback. She's (hopefully) at work but her daughter goes to school in the area, so...hopefully they're both alright.

All public schools were closed today in celebration of Veteran's Day.

Me and Enamon are okay cuz we don't live anywhere near Rockaway beach. i'm gonna start calling a few friends though. To check up on them.

Um, I'm alright. I just woke up and found out about this here on Barbelith. I'm in Manhattan, so everything is cool with me.
I have no family or friends in QUeens, but if it was Brooklyn, it'd be a completely different story...

Yuk, that means my friend's daughter might be home...

However, heard from a mutual pal that she doesn't live in the immediate area of the crash. (Phew!) but we're all still waiting to hear her voice.

Todd: didn't want to rot the other thread, but...Great post re: vote counting. Remind me if we ever get the NYC Barbelith meeting together (!?!?) to buy you a drink.

Anyone else in New York having the experience that people are NOT freaking out about this as much at all (aside from those in the affected area, of course) as compared to, say, the day Anthrax was confirmed in NYC? That day, tons of people from my office absolutely flipped out and went home, some taking absurd precautions on the way. Now, no one seems to be too concerned about what happened today.

Are we just used to tragedy now? Is there some sort of 6th sense that tells people what is a "normal" disaster and what is unusual and calamitous danger?

(and thanks for the drink offer Ierne!)

Todd: Maybe it's that we really, really, really want it to be an accident this time and not more hijacking. Another intentional incident would take quite a few of us over the edge.

Just read:
It may sound callous, but I've been wondering when fucking California will FINALLY get hit. – Flux

Ouchee! Maybe things are a little more normal, if we still have it in us to diss our perpetual rivals on the West Coast. (Not that I agree with Flux! I've got palz over in Frisco...)

I'm fine; don't live or work anywhere near there.

I think people are, sadly but understandably, getting used to tragedies like this. We'll be very very lucky, after all, if we don't suffer more terrorist attacks (regardless of whether this incident was terrorism or not) over the next months, and NY is a prime target, of course.

Anyway, the more I hear, the more it seems that, given present reports, this was an accident with very, very unfortunate timing. (not like there's ever a good time for a plane to crash into Queens, but you know what I mean.....)

But everyone keeps saying "Given what we know at this point, it looks like an accident." "What we know at this point" could change with time. But I'm praying it's an accident.

Good news – my pal and her daughter are shaken up, but OK. They live in a different part of Rockaway Beach.

It just seems unfair that NY, NJ, and DC are constantly getting shit lately, but the West Coast and the Midwest are sitting pretty... could the problems at least even divvy itself along the map? Um, please?
