For those who can't get onto the news sites:

Jet crash
An American Airlines plane carrying up to 285 passengers today crashed in New York.

The Boeing 767 crashed in a residential area in the borough of Queens, about five miles from JFK airport.

It was the same type of plane that was flown into the World Trade Centre by suicide hijackers on September 11.

TV pictures showed thick black smoke rising from the wreckage of the plane.

At least four buildings in the Queens district were reported to be on fire.

The plane, flight number 677, had been coming in to land at JFK airport.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was joining rescue workers at the scene of the crash.

All of New York's main airports have been closed in the wake of the crash.

According to myself...

This is what probably happened:

Engine catches fire. Airplane safety system "let's go" of engine. Engine doesn't drop straight down but instead hits the side of the airplane due to the fact that the plane was taking off and when planes take off they do it in circles. Engine hits plane, causes an explosion. Hydroalics(sp?) and fusealage(sp?) damaged. Pilot finds it hard to control plane. Try to bring plane over water. This puts horrible strain on plane which starts to fall apart (due to natural forces and the explosion) and eventually crashes into Queens.
