Hi,

A friend is coming to stay with me next month and I was wondering if anyone could recommend any tourist attractions with a difference, I'm thinking of taking her around some of the occult sites in London (and I don't mean one of those crappy ghost walks with a guide dressed as a ghost) - So if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it - I was thinking about AOS's house but its just a patch of grass and isn't that exciting

Yikes, I'm no expert but we've got John Dee's grave, Blake's grave, Greenwich Park (y'know there was a 'crop' circle there a few months back?!) and, um, lots of other stuff what I'll remember when the coffee kicks in. But Stephen/Ghost Doctor knows more abaaht hoccult Landan than me, squire.

Cheers. Funny you should mention John Dee after the dream I had last night, but yeah thanks it all helps.

Nay worries, sah. And thanks for that article Kit Kat, it's been both interesting and helpful for me.

Agreed, I think Hawksmoor goes on the list, is there any one building thats more outstanding than the rest?

Hi, new round here but here are few sugestions for places.....

John dees scrying mirror and one or two other pieces of his are on display in the british museum.

oppasit cannon street tube(i think)is a chinese bank, in the wall Low down, in a glass case is a stone which is part of a roman omphalous (lingum) which used to be in the middle of what is now the road.

There is an excavated mithras temple in front of another bank close to there, cant remember exact location, but if you ask someone might know.

st pauls cathedral is built on the site of an old 'druid' temple ( dosent justify a visit but a useful bit of info to bandy around.)

if on the trail of AOS then he probaly visited most pubs around the elephant and castle - so a pub crawl would proably be the best thing!!! the site of his flat is a carpark or something now.

bob.

The Hawksmoor that's probably in best nick (externally - you can't get into it) is probably going to be Christ Church in Spitalfields. It's not far to walk from Liverpool St/Brick Lane; you should see the fairly vertiginous spire from some way off...

Well, Highgate Cemetery is always good for a laugh. One book I'd recommend here is Walking Haunted London, which mentions lots of interesting places to visit.

Hey, I thought I'd resurrect this thread, a friend of a friend is coming to town and we've been trying to think up things for them to do. I suggested the Hawksmoor Churches, The Plough (for novelty rumour pub value), a couple of shops to visit. I was wondering if anyone has had anymore ideas for this kind of thing in the last year or so??

You know I have no idea who was coming to visit me back then....and what kind of John Dee dream was I having?

When's the friend coming?

Spooky I was reading this the other day!
Apparently the John Dee collection is now in the 'Enlightenmnet' exhibition in the reading room in the great court.

For the invisibles fans there is St Dunstan's in the East between the monument and the Tower. It can be very atmospheric. Anyone had any experiences there?

You could walk some of the London leys like:

The St Paul's cathedral ley running from St Clement Danes to The Temple Church to St Paul's to St Helen's Bishopgate to St Dunstan's in Stepney.

The Strand ley - St Martin-in-the-Field to St Mary-le-Strand to St Clements Danes to St Dunstan's Fleet Street to Arnold Circus which is the site of the Mount.

Or the London Stone ley - St Martin's Ludgate then east through St Paul's down Cannon Street past the London Stone to All Hallows then the Tower.

Nice walks and full of interest.

Weirdly () I went to St. Clement Danes School. We used to go to the church every year for this major ritualistic celebration of the founding of the school.

So I was reading 'The Garden Of Hermetic Dreams' and I notice in the thanks he shouts out to the staff at Treadwells, and his fellow habitues at the Plough. Is that us do you think?

So *bump*.

Crossbones graveyard?

It's near the George in London Bridge.

There's always a gathering at Cross Bones on the evening (7:30PM) of the 23rd of each month - whatever that day the 23rd falls upon.

ackroyds 'london: a biography' is also a wonderful guide. have fun

This is a cool thread, but I am a long way from London. Anyone think that we should make a spinoff thread? Perhaps Occult Sites The World Over?

Especially Canada.

Because that's where Oddman chills.

Canadian threadrot: there is that whole deal with Manitoulan island being a Pet Sematary-style demon infested doppleganger haunt.

I'm buying land there.

Feel free to start it- I bumped this one rather than start another in case nobody had much interest (which turned out to be the case), I noticed the Plough and Treadwells in the thanks of the book I was reading.

We could have a Barbelith World Occult Sites Map. Or 'Magic Places Near You'.

Highgate Cemetery. I was just there a fortnight or so ago...on some business, but turned out to be more of a pleasure.

There are two cemeteries actually, the east and the west. The west one is lovely for historical value...fine victorian tombs and egyptian inspired follies. The only way in is by guided tour...unless you're crafty I suppose.

But the eastern cemetery is even lovelier in many ways. You tip a small donation at the gate, and then are free to wander the grounds. One can veer off the main paths into gorgeous, overgrown woodland areas. The sense of stillness, beauty and mortality is humbling.

Go...with rum if you like! It'll be appreciated.

Re Highgate: It was mostly the East that I used to visit. This had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the West had an entrance fee and good security whereas the East always had this one wall that backed onto a dodgy estate and kids were always tearing it down.

If anyone's passing through, please say hi to George Eliot and Claudia Vera Jones.
