Self Moderation

I'm not too sure what the general opinion is on this one, but is everyone completely happy with the moderating process as it stands?
Aside from being sure that the moderators have better things to be doing than moderating typing errors or changing punctuation, I've noticed several comments with an additional post by the same user directly afterward. Surely it would be easier for us to return to the days when we could moderate our own post, thereby correcting our own trival errors or technical problems without having to bother the moderators or make lengthy errata posts?

Right now I have mixed feelings about how things currently are. I certainly miss the old days of being able to correct my own posts quickly and efficiently, and without the need to take it to a "Higher power." I have often had to post after a post to make comments about how the above post should have looked. read, etc.

On the other hand, I have also found that the moderation has been done quickly as well. I have submitted a moderation request and had it carried out practically instaneously. I guess it all depends on who you catch hangin' out here in Litherland.

So I am feeling a little from column A and a little from column B about this. I like bieng able to edit my own work at my will, but I have found the whole moderation process reasonable and acceptable.

Also, how are the moderators themselves finding their duties? Too much, OK, no problem?

No problems for me personally down in the Gathering, but the duties there are fairly light as most people there are playing nicely anyway. And the moderation mechanic couldn't be simpler.

Was n't this whole thing started so that people couldn't delete posts/threads and cause thread chaos?

Hmmm...I'd be curious as to the comments of Conversation mods, since I'm assuming they see the most traffic. I also agree with you, G.D.G, in as much as I can see both the pros and cons. It just rather irritates me when I have to bother a moderator with what is invariably a simple little correction or addition that I could do myself in a few seconds.

And yes, angel, I completely agree that we shouldn't be permitted to fragment a thread by deleting our own posts, but I was referring more to the self-moderating aspect.

Been thinking about moderation issues in the wake of the Knodge Wars. Quite apart from anything else, moderators are pretty much a required part of any community that has a large number of members. Remove moderators, who's going to clear up the poop left by yer Prisonerxxxx's? It's unfair and unrealistic to expect one person to be able to spot all problems and sort them out quickly.

Pre-mods, anyone who didn't know how to get a link, italic text, images, etc. working threatened to derail a thread into a mass of UBB code explanations. Doesn't happen now, because everyone knows that a moderator will fix HTML blunders.

I just requested an alteration to one of my own posts and it was performed almost immediately. The only times that this isn't likely to happen are late at night or over the weekends. There's hardly anybody here then, so it's not a major issue.

The actual process of moderating a forum is remarkably easy. I've had worries recently about tsome aspects of moderation, but not because of the amount of work involved.

I'm fine with the present arrangement, and could happily moderate more than the Policy...

I don't mind it, personally. Its not much work for me, and its really more of a formality hurtle to encourage folks to not depend on the ability to alter your posts. Get it right the first time, raise the bar a little. Really, it mostly just cuts out the possible abuses people could use self moderation for. Its not like any reasonable alteration to your post is going to be denied, and most are approved pretty quickly.

I'm finding it okay... the self-moderation thing I can understand, but did lay itself open to abuse as has already been discussed.

What I sometimes think would be nice would be if a moderator, when refusing a request (not something I think I've done yet) had the option of explaining why. Not sure how this'd work, but it would seem... polite somehow.

I've only refused a couple moderation requests but I've PM'ed the person in question each time to have a one-on-one on the subject. It's exceptionally rare that I'll actually refuse a request, though. Like when moriarty gets all self-conscious and wants to delete a perfectly interesting thread that he's started, for instance...

Yeah, PM-ing's one solution, but what if you were refusing for a very contentious reason? Would anonymity be preferable? Actually, on second thoughts, anonymity might just be wussy. PMing's probably the way to deal with that one.

Yeah, I agree. That would be wussy (Can we use 'wussy' as an adjective? Because I might just have to do that more often...). Although nothing particularly unpleasant has come up in my duties as moderator, I'm prepared for that eventuality and will perform the tasks of my office with a set jaw and grim determination. There's more to this job than just the shiny red jumpsuit, you know.

What, you mean you haven't received yours yet?

I should apply for the position of moderator just so I can fix my own damn typos. I'm such a pain in the ass...

I just hate it when I duplicate my posts. It makes me feel like a berk, and I'm too ashamed to bother one of the nice moderators. Typos I can live with.
As long as people don't look at my occasional double posts and think 'oo, wot a prat,' I can live with it.

I know that's what you're thinking though. You all think I'm a big silly.

You are a big silly. We all double-post, mis-type, bugger up HTML etc etc. And all the nice moderators have to do is go clicky on a little button, and your duplicitous nature becomes our little secret.

You big silly, you.

Hows about a five-minute time limit to edit your post after you've posted?

That's a very interesting idea....

The Conversation has four moderators - myself, grant, Lionheart and Flyboy. I'm honestly not entirely sure how often Fly and Lionheart are around nowadays... grant, you there? How's traffic your end (you big, buff monster o' lovin')?

Today's been pretty heavy, but I think it's mainly from here in Policy. In general, I *have* noticed there are usually a few moderation tasks waiting for me on Monday morning, but nothing extreme.
