One of James Burke's CONNECTIONS series mentioned a link between the two. Does anyone here know more about this?

Wasn't one of the main Hitler Youth concerns the idea of a healthy young Germany? I seem to recall calisthenics being pretty much a part of the regimen of meetings, early on - 'course, I could be fulla shit.

I think it was just that the Nazis used them as a part of the whole healthy living ideal - perhaps the Riefenstahl-directed films of Nazi life have caused the two to be ominously linked?

Someone in the office claimed this morning that the Nazi officers' uniforms and the Hitler Youth outfits were designed by Hugo Boss. Is this true?

Apparently so. While it's not Hugo Boss as they are today, the company that became them did.

The Third Rail site did a mockup of the fashions. They have a Washington Post story archived:

Fashion Firm Discovers Its Holocaust History
Clothier Hugo Boss Supplied Nazi Uniforms With Forced Labor

The German clothing factory that eventually became the international menswear powerhouse Hugo Boss AG manufactured Nazi uniforms during World War II and most likely did so using slave labor.

The revelation appeared in the latest issue of the Austrian current affairs magazine Profil. A statement from Hugo Boss AG, which is based in Metzingen, Germany, details and confirms much of the account.

Cor - then again, those uniforms were good though. You couldn't write it better - evil bad guys with nice black uniforms, shiny leather and death's heads everywhere... and they got Hugo Boss thrown in.
On the original point, the whole 'healthy mind, healthy body' bit was a big part of nazi ideology. Look at what happened to people with disabilities, mental or physical.
Looking deeper, the idea behind the get togethers - the sports, gymnastics, dancing, marching, singing - was actually a very good way of getting the nation together as a whole. Some people have commented on it as a type of secular religion, with the nation as the item of worship. It made people feel good, they were able to participate and it engendered a strong sense of nationalism.
Looking at the feel-good factor brought about by England's performance in the world cup, it makes a lot of sense to bring people together around these sorts of event. It also explains why they were so pissed at Jesse Owens.

Actually, I got the impression that gymnastics contributed to the formation of Nazism. I mean the parts about loyalty, nationalism, health and so on --- that the influence worked both ways.
