When I was just a lad on the cusp of adulthood, couldn't get enough of a song called "Say It Ain't So, Joe" by Murray Head.
Unusual and haunting tune and, frankly, weird singing voice, but still gives me goosebumps. It's all about learning not to fall apart when people let you down. Apparently the Joe in the title was an American baseball star (Shoeless Joe Jackson) who betrayed his fans by throwing a game or something...
My interest had been intitally spiked by Murray Head having played a stroppy young lust object, fought over by Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson, in John Schlesinger's film "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". Coincidentally, his little brother, Anthony Stewart Head, went on to find world fame as Giles in Buffy. |
