ladyfest is coming up. from 1 - 4 august, there's going to be loads of stuff going on - music/film/workshops/performance. from the website:

"The following bands have confirmed to play, even though it is not yet certain which bands will play which days: Angelica, Gina Birch, Bangs, Chicks on Speed, Sarah Dougher, Electrelane, Gertrude, The Gossip, The Haggard, Hello Cuca, The Hissyfits, Holly Golightly, Kaito, Katastrophy Wife, Lolita Storm, Mika Bomb, Mirah, Moonkat, People Like Us, Pico, Printed Circuit, Pro Forma, Spy 51, Tendertrap, Valerie, We Start Fires."

anyone likely to be going? i'm a big fan of gertrude, and some of the spoken word and film stuff at the horse hospital looks good.

I'll be going to anything they let boyz into - which I'm pretty sure is all the gigs at least. Very keen to see Angelica, COS, Electrelane, The Gossip and Valerie in particular (never heard anything by the last two but want to).

there's only one 'grrls only' workshop that i know of. and do see gertrude if you get the chance. i will feel like a bit of an old aunty i think - must take my rocking chair along and tell them how much better queeruption was. even though it's unlikely to be true. there is an official website, the address of which i've forgotten, so google 'ladyfest 2002' and you'll get all the info.

Oh, I'm keen to hear The Gossip - thanks for the specifics, suds...

Valerie I need to hear because they have a song which contains the following lyrics, written after Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein was rude about a member of Valerie shouting for 'Dance Song 97' at a S-K gig:

"Carrie, you are my guitar She-Ra,
But when you said 'Quit living in the past!'
I wanted to stick your richenbacker up your fucking ass..."

There's a chance I might be going to at least some of the Ladyfest things (the bands listed above universally rock - except the one's I don't know, but I'm sure they do to). It's about time I phoned my gig-going friends and said "we still going then?" I suppose..

I've just discovered that !!!PATTI SMITH!!! is playing dates in Nottingham, Brighton and London at around the same time, and mark my words, I'm going to at least one of them, soo... we'll see how things transpire I guess..

rizla - !!patti smith!! is playing at the union chapel in islington at around the end of august, i think. but it's 25 quid a ticket, so i'll have to give it a miss.

I'm still oohing and arring about whether I can/should go.
What would be cool, though really expensive, would be if my friends & I could spend a weekend in London, see Patti and some of the Ladyfest shows..

Well I'm also completely broke... Would be annoyingly missing The Gossip tonight if they hadn't cancelled. And Valerie are on tomorrow *afternoon*, so that's out...

Have also seen Electrelane a few times, so I'm probably going to try to round up people to go to the following instead, which sounds ace:

Ladyfest London Club Night
10pm-3am at Sahara Nights
Miss-Shapes, the little sister of Popstarz, gets a Ladyfest make-over with DJs Mikey and Lush playing hits from the girls of indie, punk, pop, rock, electroclash and R'n'B.... DJ Spinsta, Farzana, Vic Strap-On, Get the Wow, Delia and Future is a Dare provide the tunes downstairs in the Ladyfest Lounge, along with The Actionettes who will be performing during the night.

...and then will hopefully be going to see Chicks On Speed on Sunday. May not be able to afford to do both though...

Well I was at the show on Friday, but had to get the bus home before the club night, sadly.

You missed an absolutely storming Electrelane performance .. they did tons of feedback and did a new song that sounded a bit like the theme tune to an 80s sci-fi cartoon so cool it never existed.

Hello Cruca sounded like, um, Man or Astroman? meets Bikini Kill in Spanish. Think about that for a few minutes..

And Mirah was really, really brilliant, so brilliant that I spent more money than I could really afford to on her album.

i didn't get along to any of this - i'm too deaf to have appreciated any of the bands. did anyone go to any of the workshops? what was the vibe of the event you went along to, rizla? anyone else? - some people i know were a bit worried that it might be very white and middle class.... how was it 'on the ground', so to speak? i've read a bit about the festival in scotland and america and it sounded great. i wondered how the london one compared.

I didn't get to go to any of the workshops adly, though they all sounded good.

I guess that what with being primarily an indie guitar music thang, it was pretty white & middle class, though nowhere near entirely or oppressively so of course..

The 'vibe' was pretty good .. quite a lot of the people there mostly ignored the music and spent their time hanging around at the back talking and buying/swapping fanzines and records .. which was cool between the bands, but a little annoying during the perfomances..

There were spoken word / performance pieces on between the bands, so it was pretty hard to ignore the social/political agenda, even if you were just there for the music. Er, which was a good thing, obviously.
