Flaming Lips show

Fengs for the Memory

July 4 Alex theatre Birmingham uk.
Not a well know venue for bands of any kind, The next show there was 'Postman Pat where's Jess?'. Anyway, it was a strange night all round - sitting down, no smoking, no drinks allowed in except handy 1 glass bottles of red wine?. Although the show was billed as Yoshimi versus the pink robots, they did only 4 new songs as far as i could tell. This goes back to an incident involving Husker Du and a dissapointed Wayne Coyne. The whole show weaved about like a happy drunk. It was a spectacle, nonstop film and video footage shown on a large screen behind the band, all more or less synced with the tunes - even the Teletubies made an appearance. The band were joined by 'Frog bear' and 'Dog bear' two fellows in full costume who's job it was to throw various items at the band as they played: Large glitter filled ballons and what looked like fake snow. There only other contribution was to play drums and bass respectively on a cover of Kylie's 'can't get you out of my head' which sounded like Slint doing the flaming lips doing kylie? as he put it 'you know songs that are sad but have a really annoying disco beat, well we have made this sadder and even more annyoying'. There was also a camera fixed to Mr Coyne's microphone which gave you some interesting views of his blood covered face, and nasal hair, nice. Other highligts: Portable strobe lighting worn around the neck and excellent hand puppet skills. A bloody good night.

Yes it sounds like a bit of a show, the lips, complete with blood, tears and teletubbies (that'll be the title of my debut album, I've decided). I'm actually seeing em tonight in London, but not sure if it's quite the same cavalcade of madness you describe, as they're sharing a bill with Bob Mould, as I keep telling everyone within earshot.
Been listening to the Soft MAchine in preparation- quite into it. Haven't seen the sullen-faced noisemeister in a few years either- looking forward to the whole occassion

The Lips are back on tour in Europe after becoming the kings of the summer festival season. I saw them at Glastonbury and the Witnness festival and I have to advise anyone with a interest to go see them.
The Lips decided about a year back that all their gigs should be a party and a party they do. People dancing on stage in furry animal suits, 4 foot balloons thrown out into the crowd, stories about the Fiber Optic Jesus that Jack White gave them and a live sound that blows away anything on the last two albums.
Oh seeing them cover 7 nation Army was pretty sweet too!

So go see the Flaming Lips. You won't regret it.

Just to endorse all of this, I really can't recommend the Flaming Lips enough. The balloons and furry animals are fun, as is Wayne Coyne singing the chorus to 'Yoshimi' through a glove puppet (a glove puppet of a nun with sharp teeth, no less). They also did a cover of 'Breathe' when I went to see them, which may have been another factor in my smiling for days on end after the gig...

I got tickets for the show in Leicester yesterday. In Leicester! Imagine my excitement! I'm going to be able to walk there!

This is good, as bands never play here, I have trouble getting anywhere that isn't Leicester, and it's the Flaming Lips; who are good.

Now I have to calm down and wait until October.
