CAPED CRUSADERS ALL SET TO CLASH
Superheroes Batman and Superman are set to go head to head in a new movie.
WOLFGANG PETERSEN, who made The Perfect Storm starring GEORGE CLOONEY, will direct Batman vs. Superman for Warner Brothers Pictures.
The film, due to be released in 2004, will feature the two superheroes as allies who come to blows over what Petersen describes as differing philosophies.
"It is a clash of the titans," Petersen tells US trade newspaper Variety. "They play off of each other so perfectly.
"Superman is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama."
The project will not be continuations of the previous Batman and Superman films and neither of superheroes has yet been cast. Petersen says he is seeking actors who can offer complex emotions as well as brawn.
"Everything after September 11 is different," he says. "You want to change the image of these superheroes."

At least it looks better than this Superman movie which was/will be directed by McG of "Charlie's Angels" notoriety.

Says here in front of me in the Sun that Batman will be played by Matt Damon, then again this is the Sun.

Do you think Superman will be Ben Affleck then? It's about time those two came to blows. No one buys that "buddy" routine.

Personally, I believe that Damon and Affleck have been coming to blows for quite some time. Every movie they appear in together seems to be utterly slashtastic to the nth degree. Therefore, I think that this will be a wonderful movie. Even if it's shite.

Am I the only one who feels like Wolfgang Peterson sounds like he's trying to turn the world's greatest detective into some sort of wolverine rip off?

First of all, Matt Damon as Batman? I hope not. Yuck! Still, I guess he couldn't be as bad as George Clooney. This movie is certain to be royally cliched and relentlessly post 9/11 politically correct.

Remember kids! America is the champion of liberty and democracy!

A well done and straightforward "The Dark Night Returns" adaptation would fuckin' well rock, but that only likely to happen in a parallel universe.

Hmmm, i don't know whether to be excited or terrified. This could wind up being great, but it has the potential to be so very, very bad if handled wrongly, which, let's face it, it probably will be.

...and i really hope Matt Damon isn't Batman. I guess it could be worse, but not too much worse (unless they get fucking Freddie Prinze Jr to play Superman).

as testiment to the suprising un-geekyness of my workplace i mentioned this and everyone said some like "Superman would kill him"

I tried to explain the bionic suit and kryptonite ring, but they just stared blankly at me.

I don't think they're going for Damon specifically to play Batman. According to this, Petersen just means that he plans on doing the sort of off-the-rails casting that Burton did with Keaton, etc. . But then again, when was the last time we saw a cookie-cutter, Van-Damme/Stallone/Schwarzenegger action-only star in the last 10 years.

Although, as a total threadrot, whoever decided Affleck should be Daredevil should be flogged.
