copy and paste job again but go to www.minack.com to see the minack theatre in cornwall. it was built mostly by one woman, rowena cade, early in the last century. read that again - this amazing open air theatre, built on a cliffside by one woman. first time i went there was just after the end of a very serious relationship. emotionally, i was crawling around on all fours. this place hit me for six and helped pick me up. i've not yet seen a performance there - apparently it's amazing to see the sun setting behind the stage - but i've walked around there a few times, incredibly inspired. i've heard of one man, not given to emotion, found crying on one of the seats because he was so moved by the place. legend has it that after a shipwreck, customs and excise men went to the beach below and found rowena cade, a slightly built and well to do woman, picking up sticks on the sand. they asked if she'd seen any of the wreckage and she said no. they went away - not realising that she'd carried shitloads of mahogany and teak up the cliff to use as building materials in the dressing room! in later years she was carted around in a wheelbarrow.
and she was queer. way to go, rowena! |
