who's got the nicest hand these days?- I'm trying to put together (mostly spandex) comix packages 4 my little cousins- ages 10 + 15 respectively- + I want the most visually stunning stuff I can get my hands on.

so far my fan-boy choices are:
rags morales on 'hawkman'
JG Jones on 'marvel boy'
hitch + neary on 'ultimates'

if you can find Strange Days 1-3 circa 1984-85 by Pete Milligan and Brendan McCarthy your cousins will be eternally grateful for the visual pleasure they will receive

I seldom buy a comic because of an artist but the guys I really love to check out are...

Quitely
John Romita Jr.
Paul Pope
Mike Alred
Jim Mahfood
looking forward to Cameron Stewart's Catwoman (next month?)
Rick Mays
David Mack

the guy drawing the new Vertigo title "Fables" is good. Lan Medina.

As far a what teenagers would like, I have no idea. They all seem to be buying Manga at the shops I go to. I don't dislike Manga. I just have not read enough of it to know one artist from the next. It all seems the same and I don't know how they can find pleasure in cutting toner paper all day. It looks cool but seems like a nightmare to do. Give me Jack Kirby style thick ass lines any day.

I like Chris Bachalo, myself, even though he did some Generation X stuff...

mah, mad, + bach- too cartoonish. I want to keep them away from the anime curse- so I'm looking for dynamic, clean, semi-realistic.

such as:
olivetti
Bill Reinhold

Too cartoonish? Too cartoonish?!

(Stomps off in disgust)

(Returns, sheepishly)

Yeah, I guess you're right.

Does Gene Colan draw comics any more? He was nice.

Gene Colan's old Daredevil comics were magnificent. Unfortunately, he came back and did a few issues maybe 3-4 issues and they were pitiful. He was but a shadow of his former self.

Gene the Dead is doing a Spider graphic novel with the Wonderful Don McGregor that looks to be incredibly pulpy and way too fun.

Hm...who gets me to buy comics for no reason other than they look good?

Alan Davis
Jose Garcia Lopez
Humberto Ramos
Adam Freaking Warren who doesn't draw anymore, the goatfucking bastard
I think Alex Ross's stuff is incredible, even though I know its flaws
Criss Cross (who made the books of Milestone a joy to read)
The new artist on Gloomcookie who's first issue ships in a week or so.
The artist who started Gloomcookie
Scott McDaniel
And yeah, I like Frank Miller. So bite me.

alan davis, exSSSelllent. the original fan-boy favorite with a million clones- he really does draw 'em with the tits hanging out. what's worth picking up?- I think I'll go look for the Avengers stuff that I couldn't bear to make myself read.

the real dillemma is Cassaday- planetary is too grim, + captain america is too jingoistic- I would have to send that issue of skull kill krew where the rasta takes the piss out of Cap'n for wearing a symbol of imperialism. they chould change the name of the book to captain red scare? captain yellow peril? captain hegemony? (+ get 'the new mccarthyism' to draw it, of course)

also should pick up the tom strongs not featuring nazi sex-fiends or overtly wanky post-modern analyses of genre.

there are few things more fun in the world than looking at Brendan Mcarthy's art. skin, rogan gosh, judge dredd, the close linework i saw in an old alan moore future shock recently....mmmm

What Alan Davis to get?

Captain Britain, both trade paperback, but the second one has better art...and the first one has Alan Moore. The Nail, possibly the best Elseworlds. His Excalibur issues which are waiting in your shop owners discount bin for a home.

Ditto on The Nail--it has such clean art, the younger folk are sure to love it. It does have some killing though.
The Captain Britain stuff with Alan Moore seems pretty dark...it seems like more of a mature storyline to me.

Locust No longer

Mike Zulli
Steve Bissette
Jim Woodring
Paul Pope
Tim Sale
Geoff Darrow
and many more, I leave out the old timers.

Surely a 15 year old can take something slightly mature?

Brendan McCarthy, definitely. I'd also plump for some Dean Ormston, but I'm not sure what superhero/fanboy stuff he's done.

Oh, and Rian Hughes. They must see some Rian Hughes. He did the art for a brilliant series of one-off stories for 2000AD called Tales From Beyond Science and also the wonderful Really & Truly. Good stuff for sassy kiddywinks to ogle.
