Godwin's Law... anyone care to enlighten me?

Letter in today's (well, tomorrow's, technically) Guardian:

"A widely accepted rule of internet discussion groups known as Godwin's law is generally taken to mean that in any debate the first person to invoke comparison with Hitler or the Nazis has automatically lost."

(In reference to the anti-euro ads with Rik Mayall as a euro-loving Hitler.)

Anyone heard of this (funnily enough, it reminded me of lots of stuff)? And who the fuck was Godwin?

Comes from Usenet - FAQ on Godwin's Law. "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." So, technically, it doesn't mean that the comparer has lost - just that the thread's become a waste of time.

Curiously, in the context of the Guardian, I was thinking about it this week when I read that column by some Washington Post hack, who compared Arafat to Hitler in I think it was the fifth paragraph.

was going to write a sarky letter along those lines, but, er, I didn't

The fifth paragraph or the fifth column?

And here I thought that Godwin's law was that women with the last name of Godwin from Canada are darn cute.

Solitaire, I'll be sure to tell both my aunts and my mother. I'm sure they'll be quite pleased to know you feel that way
