Junko Mizuno's "Cinderalla"

They say an image is worth a 1,000, but I don't know what I can say about that. In a way, her art reminds me of Frank Kozic & "The Nightmare Before Christmas", but it's so much higher on the "What the FUCK?!?" scale. Every image I see in this site's art gallery is like a new rubbernecking experience. "Goddamn, that's fucked! (wiggles tooth) OW!"

Anyways, she's doing a book tour on the west coast in Late July/Early August. Also, she has some stuff released in English before, but her new work "Cinderella" is coming out this month from Viz Comics. Here's the first page (more in the above link's "preview" section):

Kids w/ dentures?! Protagonists that love cleaning up puke?! Baby ducks on a shish-kabob?! WTF?!? And that's why I'm going to pick this up--it's just too fucking weird not to.

I pre-ordered this when it was solicited in Previews based entirely on the Mizuno stuff that I saw in Secret Comics Japan and an issue of Pulp that I flipped through recently. I'm usually not that impulsive when it comes to buying graphic novels, but I have a feeling that I'm not going to be at all disappointed.

On a related note, another collected Pulp serial, Short Cuts, came out today. I flipped through that in the store and it looked bizarre and well worth buying, as well.

I think I've seen Mizuno's work on this British tv show Japanarama. They use it in between scenes.

Reminds me a bit of Jhonen Vasquez meets the Powerpuff Girls....

This is out there. Bizarre stuff, but I love it. The art is fantastic. There's some kind of Goth Japanese Strawberry Shortcake idiom going on here. The story is out of control: a loose retelling of Cinderella, filled w/fairies and giant fruits and zombies and nudity. And there are stickers in the back of the book. I liked this for the same reason that I liked Cola Madnes: it feels like the artist has let go of the reins of control and let her muse take her where it will. It's not always a successful tack, but it's usually interesting..
