The US Navy has heard the call of Cthulhu

I don't know if anyone else here has noticed this. It's a few weeks old but I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere.

From CNN.com:
Tuning in to a deep sea monster

Excerpts:
"LONDON, England -- Scientists have revealed a mysterious recording that they say could be the sound of a giant beast lurking in the depths of the ocean."

"While it bears the varying frequency hallmark of marine animals, it is far more powerful than the calls made by any creature known on Earth, Britain's New Scientist reported on Thursday.
It is too big for a whale and one theory is that it is a deep sea monster, possibly a many-tentacled giant squid."

fhtagn!

What have they found in Russia?

Fuck! They say it's not a crocodile, though it looks like one. Definitely looks serpentine. Yet they talk about fur! Wow. Looks almost like one of those primitive whales, a "basilosaurus".

Actually, I'd be highly surprised if it wasn't a whale. The "hair" looks like nothing more than decomposing muscle & ligaments to me.

Hydra vs Leviathan

That thing from Russia is definitely a toothed whale, nothing Lovecraftian (or even particularly cryptozoological, since it could very easily be any of several known species) about it...

On the other hand, i don't believe the "Bloop" sound has ever been positively identified - i think they just chose to forget about it...

There almost certainly are things (possibly even quite big things) lurking in the depths of the sea that have never been observed alive or classified by science (it's an oft-repeated quote, tho i don't know from whom, that we know more about the surface of Mars than the bottom of our own oceans), but i do think something much bigger than the biggest whales existing, but only having been heard once, might slightly defy credibility...

But bear in mind how deep down the potential "creatures" are, how recently we've developed high-tech seacraft/scanners, and how slowly big animals/their metabolisms tend to move compared to little ones...
