Little Geek Help Please

I need a little geek help.

I have an AMD K-6 at home. It’s an old, cruddy 400 mhz processor. I’d like to upgrade that today. Does anyone know what size or slot socket this processor uses? I think it is the same as the Celerons about that speed.

Any help or resources you can point to me would be nice.

I've been told from a good source that its a super socket 7 - does that help?

This page has a lot of information on K6s.

I have a feeling that AMD chips run on a slightly different socket to Intel (Celeron) chips. I used to run an AMD meself on a socket 7 motherboard, and so had to buy a new motherboard (socket 370) to accomodate the new chip when I upgraded. Unfortuantely it looks as though the fastest AMD chip which supports Socket 7 is about 600mhz, as speedier chips use socket A, in the case of AMDs; and socket 370, in the case of Intel chips. If you want a faster than 600mhz PC you may have to upgrade the motherboard (not too mention the fact that finding a chip as slow as 600mhz these days may be a task in itself).

Your best best, Rev., may be to speak to the staff of whichever place you're intending to purchase your upgrades from and get their advice. In my experience most PC staff tend to be fairly knowledgeable about the product their selling...

Well, a 600 is going to represent a 50% increase in megahertz so even that would be a help. This is really just a stop gap measure, I'll be getting a new Mobo and chip in the coming months and demote this one to a file server or proxy or some such.

DIY electronics, here I come!

It is a Super Socket 7. It'll take up to a 500mhz K6-2, or a 450mhz K6-III.

The new motherboard/processor option is a most good one, especially considering how ridiculously cheap new mobos/processors are... I mean, when Maplins (of all places) are offering an 1800+ (1666mhz) Athlon XP and motherboard and fan for £149... the decent electronics retailers will be doing even better bargains?
