Mm. I would think that the Ultimate Spider-Man comics are more accessable and have more in common with the movie. The Amazing Spider-Man has beautiful John Romita Jr. artwork, but is about an older, continuity-based Spider-Man which is a bit harder to get into.
Now, if only Ulimate Spider-Man was drawn by JRJR instead of fucking Mark Bagley...
It might not be a bad idea to get him a couple of those big black + white "Essential" compilations that Marvel has put out, the kind with two years worth of comics in each volume. Getting him a Lee/Ditko Spider-Man and a Claremont/Byrne X-Men (there's one volume that collects everything from the first Alpha Flight story through the Hellfire Club and Dark Phoenix til after Days of Future Past - that's a lot of major X-Men stories for $15) seems like a good idea too. |
