For the past three mornings I have woke up with a song so deeply in my head that I have found myself singing it on the way to work.

This morning it was Wyclef's Jean's song about the go-go dancer.

Yesterday it was the Charlatans' Love is the Key.

On Wednesday it was Since You've Been Gone by Rainbow.

I have neither listened to nor thought about any of these songs recently. I don't listen to a music station on the radio in my car on the way to work, so I doubt I've picked them up subconsciously.

Why is this happening, does it happen to anyone else, and is there any way I can choose the music in case something REALLY offensive pops into my head tomorrow?

Maybe you're intercepting radio transmissions.

It means that you've either got a radio in your head (a la Tito Lavarria in "True Stories") or your fillings are picking up radiowaves (a la Susan Dey's character in a Partridge Family episode).

Yes, I was the one who started the "Are you getting stupider?" thread, why do you ask?

Seems similar: my younger brother used to sing in his sleep all the time, both songs he'd invented, video game tunes, and songs he'd heard on the radio.

As for an explanation?

You really got me--you really got me--you really got me.

i do this all the time. once i woke up singin 'movies' by alien ant farm, and then thought to myself 'whoah, i didn't realise i knew all the lyrics' and then i fell asleep again.
i often wake up singing songs i didn't know i knew. i like doing it.

It's amazing the amount of music we've got jammed into our heads whether we like it or not. I bet I could recite song lyrics for an entire year without repeating any.

OK, actually maybe not, it's hard to pull them all up on demand - BUT THEY'RE IN THERE SOMEWHERE!

Happens all the time - in fact, so much that I've started writing down my morning songs (like a dream journal) to see if they have any signifgance or meaning ... i.e the day after Sept.11 my morning song was "killing an arab" by the cure (which I hadn't heard since my teens - over a decade ago). Lately, I've met a wonderful girl and all my morning songs for the last week have been cheesey 80's love songs.

What is amazing are the songs that turn up out of no where (ie. stuff you didn't pick up somewhere from the background of the last few yesterdays - songs that you usually don't listen to or even like - and yet here they are, running through your mind) and what truly disappoints, once you start monitoring your morning mental music, is just how much shit is stashed in your mental jukebox.

As for what it all means??? Well, I've been keeping track of my morning songs for the past few months and you know ... I got no idea.

I always thought it was just me!
I often start whistling or hummung tunes for (apparently) no reason. And then when someone asks me what it is I'm forced to admit I don't know or can't remember - the very act of interruption makes me forget, kinda like Schrodingers show tunes or summat.
Incidentally, ever started humming something in the office which everyone then picks up on until everyones joined in and noone is sure who started it? I used to do this deliberately for a laugh (especially when the song is 'give the anarchist a cigarette' and you work in a police station...)

Frequently. One place I worked, there was this lovely woman called Sal who happened to be a little hard of hearing and had a rather loud voice. Everyone else would be singing one song and she'd start in with a completely different song, 'coz she'd misheard us-- and it would be sung much LOUDER. We'd usually end up joining in with whatever Sal was singing; she was like a force of nature.

I used to play "program director Tarot" - the song I'd wake up with used as an indicator for the day. Gave it up after the pick of the morning was "I Wanna Be Sedated" at the maximum volume my brain could imangine it...

Lately, I've been having mournful love songs stuck in my head. Definitely not cool right now, as I've been imagining vibes that the ex wants to get back together with me and I'm still madly in love with the idea of not living alone.

I know the feeling. I've had The Ramones' "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg" in my head all day. Just be thankful the song wasn't "Beat On The Brat."

That must have been the best two days ever. The only thing better than that would Poundcake
