How do we put a stop to this? What can we, as individuals or prefferably as a group, do to change the direction this war is taking? Several million Afghanis are going to die, and most people don't even seem to notice or care. The popular media (especially CNN and other news stations) just gloss over it like its nothing. There are a lot of people who are against the way this war is going on, but we're still in the mionority. Or at least if feels that way.

What can we do to fix this? I get the feeling there's a big anti-war movement coming on, even faster than in the 60's I'm guessing, thanks to the modern communications technologies, but I don't think its happenning fast enough. Are there any plans for a march on washington yet? Or for any big demonstrations happenning anywhere other than a college campus? I'm not asking this one of those critical "you guys at Barbelith are all talk! I'm outta here!" kind of way, I'm sincerely curious. What can we do to get people to realize what's happenning in the world beyond our own borders? If there isn't something like this (protests and marches that would actually get people's attention and make them think, mass letter writing campaigns, etc. . . maybe getting our own TV show is the only way to get a significant amount of people to listen) happenning already, should we start one here? I really have no idea where start.

hey grey - myself and a team of fellow barbelithians ('framed for a crime they didin't commit' etc...) have been involved in all manner of (hopefully) consciousness-raising experiments since 911.

for starters, i've been asking people to mail out the addy of true dove to their email buddies and ask them to do the same - the site's a B.A.S.I.C. intro to the main arguments/sources etc behind the present peace protest - there's even a generic letter for you to use in the truedoveGO! thread...

more recently, five of us have started a day-by-day blog to respond to events as they occur - you can find this at peace in my time.

i have to say, the past week and a half has seen me away from the net quite a bit -'cause i'm in the middle of writing a rapid response play to the whole shebang. hopefully, when completed, i can have it performed either at rallies or in some kind of theatrical show of solidarity.

anyway - there are polenty of discussions about what we can do knocking about the 911 forum - take a look. and if you have any ideas: share 'em.

Ok, I know this has been suggested and covered here before, but I'm coming into this late and there is a LOT of threads in the New World Crisis catagory that I'm still going through, so I hope you won't think it too redundant. . .

There are a lot of other message boards on the net where people go to talk about the war, most new sites have them and I'll bet there are a lot of government sites that have them too (though I haven't checked them yet). How abot we here at Barbelith start going to these other message boards and start spreading around the information that most people aren't getting. Links to sites, arguments for why the war is bad on so many levels, criticisms of the media, links to good sites like znet, etc.

Now that I think of it, some of the posts here are so well written and well thought out that you could probably just copy and paste them directly to the other message boards (for those who don't feel like typing these long arguments over and over again). A lot of the pople at this site seem to be very good at keeping cool headed in the face of ignorance, so this group probably is the best for the job. I've heard that a lot of sites will just delete or censor anti-war posts, but if enough of us do this, (or prefferably all of us) I think we can be heard.

Emailing government officials and news organizations is another thing I've started doing. I wrote to CNN, and I'm going to go to their messege boards after I post this here, and do some more emailing tonight. Its much more cathartic than fantasizing about strangling the people on CNN

So a big giant internet culture jam is what I'm thinking about. The more of us who do it the better the chance of somebody who's never heard any of this before reading it and maybe thinking a bit more openly. If there's a thread already covering this that I haven't found yet, could somebody link me to it?

Thanks for reading

M

p.s. massive props to TrueDove, I'll make sure to spread it around.

p.p.s. I just this minute found this link at ZNET for protest.net, which I'd never seen before and am just starting to look through. Thought I'd post it here in case I wasn'tthe only one who hadn't seen it before.

I can't stop thinking!

This is more of a long term idea, but how easy would it be to produce a web page dedicated to putting up footage that normally wouldn't be shown anywhere else. Things people record at protests, pirated news footage that didn't make it to the televison. The stuff that "they" don't want "us" to see. Would the server space required for a mostly video based website be insanely expensive? IS this feasable?

ok, grey: can't stick around - i'm just about to go out etc - BUT - yes - a bunch of us already invaded other message boards/chat rooms - dig out the 'peacenikINVASION!' thread if you can.

i'd be interested in doing it again.

and, yeah - there was another thread about how the internet as new, decentralized media may go beyond even the TV/vietnam thing - as i remember, i called it 'could the internet save the world?'. over in the switchboard, NakedFlame started a opic on 'cyber-activism'.

etc.

you've got good energy, grey. good to have you around.
