Wraps up the old book nicely, but I hope to God the only reason it's printed on that shitty paper's because it's the last ish.

Haven't seen this ish yet - but the paper quality on the title was silently "improved" and issue or two ago - unfortunately the new paper made the colors look gaudier - somehow i think the popsensibility works better with the lower quality paper - unless of course X-statics is going to be a full glossy magazine...

I just don't agree w/ this idea that shitty paper is good. Shitty paper is shitty. I don't want my nice comic printed on nasty newspaper.

Nice and glossy for the tasteful Runs. Bad and ugly for the poo-men.

In an ideal world runs yes - but frequently the coloring does not fit the paper quality - Look at the recent re-issue of Daredevil: Born Again - the highly reflective, glossy paper kills the dark forboding and atmosphere that the artwork (by the excellent Mazzucelli no less) stone dead.

Its all about creating an effect with the materials used - what makes one comic look classy can make another garish and ugly

Yes, and X-Force is MTV day-glo. It's supposed to look glossy and plush - the paper works. It's not supposed to look grainy and cheap. This is pop video stuff, not tabloid.

Oh, and it really should look garish.

lots going on this issue.

- the mourning issue, everyone hanging out at headquarters getting drunk. even doop. then going out in public and roughing up reporters, tike and dead girl getting busted by the cops.
- guy ‘conversing’ w/ the edie action figure was a nice touch. looks like he’s becoming more and more (considering he already plays russian roulette every day) unhinged.
- nice to see lacuna again. was wondering if milligan was going to bring her back. glad that he did.
- all the symbols. The ubiquitous ‘x’ of course, but also the stars on the vodka bottles and lacuna’s shirt, and all the skulls.
- solomon o’sullivan (‘50% jewish, 50% irish, 100% behind you’). slightly reminiscent of that ‘cult of the unwritten book’ guy from ‘doom patrol’.
- lots of interaction w/ spike freeman this issue. liked his line about how they're in direct competition w/ x-men, x-factor, fantastic 4, etc for market dominance or whatever.
- tike and dead girl. boy that relationship seemed to fizzle pretty fast (catch her giving him the bird after their argument).
- phat and vivisector. such an interesting relationship they have.
- missed my monthly mike allred fix (thankfully laura allred was on board w/ the coloring, and oni press/aaa-pop just released a collection of early ‘madman’ stuff, so it’s all good. also, are madman and dead girl brother and sister? and when’s that madman/x-statix crossover going to happen?), but I really liked duncan fegredo’s art this issue.
- the doop kiddies hospital. the doop comicbook that phat is reading. doop on keychains and tshirts. doesn't seem to be too concerned w/ overexposure, apparently.

I thought the art in this issue was magnificent. Fegredo doing a Mike Allred impression, using all of Allred's little stylistic flourishes to render the characters (i.e. Tike's leetle dot eyes and the Kirby squiggles on Guy's chin). And he's using a big fat brush instead of a pen, which to my eyes always looks so much more satisfying.

I love Allred, but I think I honestly like this issue's art better. It got me all excited and inspired looking through it...

d fed is such a brilliant artist, and totally inspirational. and i did somehow dig this issues art so much more, strangely. and i too love allred.

so yes, i agree completely with cameron on all counts.

no, but i love peter's concepts coming through and how he and grant and everyone really are widening the scope of how cool and weird mutants can be.

it's not only solomon's powers that are awesome, but the fact that he keeps all the scraps!

almost as brilliant as wipeout fusion.

Talking to the eddie doll was great...

Spike, willing to play Russian Roullette with Guy, Does that make him more a part of the Team?
