Ok, if I want the name of a label/company type thing to be "Louder than bombs" how do I go about it? is it possible?

Some of you may see the reason for my doubt...

Well, that's a copyright and trademark issue rather than a patenting one. Where are you?

Check with Companies House. They have an online directory of registered names, and can provide you with info on setting up a company. You bank should also be able to help.

Sorry for being slightly vague. It's just I don't really know the proper terms for all this business. But basically, I want to be able to use "louder than bombs" as maybe an alias, or as a label (design/art/illustration etc) in the future. Yet I know it is the name of a Smiths record (compilation) and I just don't want to get in trouble before I even get started...

I don't theeeenk that a record title or book title or anything like that is copyright territory unless it is explicitly stated to be copyright material, or a registered trademark. If you were dealing with a band called 'Louder than Bombs', you might be on shaky territory. I would find out whether it is trademarked, and if not and you atill want to use it, you should be able to trademark it yourself.

Here's the Patent Office's stie on trademarks - might be helpful.

Cheers for the tips. Most useful.

Now, I think I'll just hope, and use it until I get the £200 that it costs to trademark... although, do I really need a trademark? Oh god, this stuff is all far too confusing for me.

Oh, hey, if there is a louderthanbombs.com - which is seemingly an artist management company based in New York for musicians - does that hinder me in any way here?

Probably not, if they don't operate over here... of course when you break in America you may find yourself forced to change your name to Louder Than Bombs UK, or The London Louder Than Bombs.
