I suppose anything should be fair game, really. But it does grate when a "serious" subject is tackled badly on television. One example that springs to mind is the recent showing of two dramas based on the troubles in Northern Ireland. One, the Jimmy McGovern stab, was excellent. The other was insipid and weak and offended me no end.
There's also the question of sensitivity... to pick up on another topic in a different thread, how would a dramatised version of the Moors Murders that was sympathetic to Hindley and Brady go down?
Is reality TV acceptable? Well, we The Filth seem to like it, so it must be "acceptable" to a large percentage of the viewing population.
Moral? Possibly not the way they feed the current crop of Big Brother contestants alcohol and provide every opportunity for them to bed each other.
Ethically sound? Nothing forces the contestants to take part, other than a consuming need to be a (however briefly) shining star in the Spectacle.
Does it matter? Well, it fills the schedules with shite, for one thing. And it makes tawdry little episodes from the day-to-day experiences of desperate wannabes/people like us the subject of heated debate. So yes. |
