so nasty I had to change the name of the man involved!

No, no...it was much, much worse when VORRIGAN did it!

What a bastard, that Jimmy Vorrigan.

Not at all like that nice Jimmy Corrigan. If Corrigan sliced someone with a broken pint glass, I'm sure he had a good reason, and felt really bad about it afterwards.

Not like that Vorrigan fucker. He's just plain sick.

Totally in agreement w/the Vorrigan scene. The utter nonchalance w/which the act is consummated makes my flesh crawl.

Vorrigan! You bastaaaard!!!

(I'm about ready to start a "Jimmy Vorrigan: Sadistic-est Kid on Earth" topic in The Creation...)

Please do. The name "Vorrigan" causes me to break out into peals of laughter every time I read it. I can only imagine what a whole thread of that nonsense would do.

So as to not derail this topic too much, another couple of disturbing scenes for yez. The lesser-hailed Vertigo Visions books (cowering in the shadow of Kill Your Boyfriend): Tainted and Face. The protagonist cutting his penis off in the former, and the protagonist daydreaming about cutting his own face off in the latter. Yeee-uck.

the bit in death in the famiy where the joker takes a crowbar to robin. goes on for ages, he's only like a teenager, and then everyone votes to kill the poor cunt.

Everyone seems to be forgetting something:when Tulip gets shot by Jody in "Preacher". I read that story in TPB format. I cant imagine what it must have been to have to wait a whole month for the next issue. another good one is when Logan's claws pop out for the first time in "Origin".You have to empathize with the character a bit for that one to have any effect. My last one isn't really that fucked-up,but it made me cry like a little bitch. When Gwen Stacy died in "Spider-Man:Blue". I'm a silly sap I know, but it was incredibly well done.

Probably not as psycho as I remember it, but Exquisite Corpse by the Pander Brothers bothered me a lot, more for the way that sick shit was drawn rather than the sick shit itself.

Likewise, the naked lust with which the gore and hackery in Tim Vigil's Faust was drawn was really gross. What ever happened to Tim Vigil? Did Mike Baron break him, too?

It takes a lot to scare me, but I've always found that first view of the Outer Church in Volume 2, issue 3 of The Invisibles to be creepy.

No love for Mr. Hyde?

You know the scene. It just happened last month. I'm still trying to get rid of the unclean feeling. Hasn't happened yet.

Body horror does it for me. Mainly out of control mutations. The experiment notes in *V for Vendetta* - an autopsy revealing vestigial fingers growing in a woman's leg, a man's skin becoming like cellophane. Similarly the issues in *Stormwatch* whenever some nasty mutagen had been released (like the issue where that ... um, thingy I can't remember was released, and all the people were hiding in the church? That poor mutated-spider-boy - I can't look at it. I usually skip that issue on rereading).

On the same note, I don't like to look at the picture of the person who died of STORMS in *Top Ten Volume 1*. Ergh.

ps. And the Dulce labs in *Invisibles* Volume 2, #4. Gahhhhh! Body horror a-go-go! Poor Bambi! Poor "Have you got something for me to eat" man! Poor whoever that was with the deer leg grafted onto his/her arm! ::runs away shrieking::

That bit in vol2 no.19(?) where King Mob is fat, old, watching porn and lamenting that 'once he used to feel something' always scared the hell out of me...

Gonna second Onion's opinion on the death of Jason Todd. Very, very unpleasant.

The Invunch in Hellblazer.

I think that's what it was called.

Bloody ghastly thing, anyway.

(Not to mention Constantine's bad temper evidenced by his expressionlessly crushing a glass in his hand in a biker bar - an earlier version of John C. who didn't have a problem with physical violence...)

Rorschach breaking fingers in Watchmen in such a disturbingly simple way. Nasty stuff. Brrrr...

Nick, wasn't the Invunche in Swamp Thing? That's where the glass crushing scene was, anyway. Or did the Invunche come back?
Disturbing? How about the whole of Dave Cooper's career, but especially the last scene of Crumple...

I can't exactly recall which French artist did this story, but it was possibly published in Metal Hurlant.

It was about this handsome space-farer, this hero, who crashlanded in a desert world where the remaining population had developed into a zombie breed, who attacked everything that was not them. As he barely escapes and kills a number of them, he is fortunately rescued by some passers-by. When he returns to his world, with the memory of the ghastly desert world inhaibited by zombies, he endulges himself with every possible luxurious activity that he couldn't there, as going on expensive dinners, having sex with women and exotic adventures in rain forests. Cue the ending where the man comes off his drug fuelled trip, where it is revealed he is a zombie in the desert world.

Disturbing.

Taboo, once again, must be mentioned for the following 2-pager, whose creator I can't recall, again. This was a story based on a deceased & respected family man's unearthed memoirs. A man whose sex life, outside the family, bordered on the unbelievably warped. There is the time when his wife accidentally drops some cake on his trousers, and she doesn't even notice his hard-on, the fact of which he gets off on, as he fantasizes about his loverman. Then there is the time when his loverman masturbates, while the family man pretends to be sleeping, and when the loverman comes, he also ejaculates, with no stimulation. As the obsession grows, the family man plays with the anal opening & at some point reaches some shit ... He says something along the lines of: 'I have tasted your sperm and urin, now I can taste your shit too...'Ewww. That's all I remember.

And then there is this disturbing Dane, who has been creating stories about Lil' Hitler and how he goes around beating up and killing random people, while occasionally raping a little under-age girl in full detail. I forget why it was so important for the creator to continually expand this universe.

& Mike Diana? I can't say, as I have only seen a panel there and another panel elsewhere. But these panels ... *shiver*

Off the top of my head, the creepiest thing I've ever seen in a mainstream comic was when Legion went back in time and raped his mother in the Legion Quest story from mid-90s X-Men.

I can't believe they printed that in a kid's comic.

Pretty much everything from Tim Vigil and David Quinn's FAUST comic. Especially the scene where Claire is having missionary sex with some stranger while her husband is bemusedly watching behind a two way mirror. She reaches up to the stranger's face in one frame with almost complete tenderness and in the next frame, she's digging her long nailed thumbs into his eyes, popping them like little balloons. Then as the guy is screaming, she very calmly and slinkily reaches for a straight razor and cut his throat in a huge gaping slash.

*shudders* It doesn't get more splatterpunk than that series.

Have to second that fat King Mob bit... shudder... and the Outer Church, it's just horrible.

The fear monkey in Swamp Thing. When it turns into Abby's greatest fear, her husband Matt, and stumbles toward her mumbling "Uh-Beeeee.... I neeeeed uuuuuu".... yeek.

Or the whole of the third TPB with uncle Arcane. Especially when Abby realises just how long she's been living with her and starts scrubbing at herself with bleach and wirewool.

Or the bit just before that when Arcane gets inside Matt via the little talking fly that crawls along his tounge between the smashed teeth.

Or damn near anything by Alan Moore... jeez that guy needs to start writing sitcoms. "Boy meets Plant" or something.

Or "living with him" even, I think she'd been living with her for a good deal longer than that.

Doom Patrol was often disturbing. Not horrifying, but unsettling.

Yes, I second the 'Sewing up the door' thing, too. But I found the room on the telly far, far creepier. Ring-esque.

The Pentagon thing fucked with me too. When Dolores describes the reporter as sounding 'Ill'... That shat me right up. And those empty rooms and dark staircases.... Fucking nightmarish. That's the stuff that really gets me - not Mum-rape or any of that crap - the bloody nightmare stuff.

Biz - you're right, it probably was 'Swamp Thing'. You know, back before Constantine was Keanu...

I'm an old fart. I just think Hellblazer hasn't been any good since the days of the Damnation Army and so on.

That was disturbing. The more recent stuff is, well, John Constantine heading towards being Rupert Giles.

I was reasonably unsettled by the Mark Millar Authority run, just because it was so weirdly determined to destroy the Authority as a positive force, and that whole section with Angie and Shen as fucktoys for the opposition was beyond the pale.

Doom Patrol.
"Pleae help me, I'm a doctor...THEY'RE CUTTING OFF MY THUMBS!"

Fuck...creeped all hell outta me.

The Kid Miracleman story in Apocrypha 1,
called "The Rascal Prince".

It was James Robinson and Kelley Jones,
and it was so deeply totally fucked up.

In a manga called the Spiral Horror, a man breaks every bone in his body to wind himself into a spiral. Pretty freaky.

John Smith's self-contained issue of Hellblazer (#51).

The laundromat, the possessed acquaintance, the old woman putting her hand back together with metal kitchen skewers, and her friends.

That was a nice issue.

brrr yeah the dog sniffing at the dead old lady's crotch, and constantine 'winning' that issue by getting the fuck out of there and puking under a bridge. john smith's oeuvre could fill a thread like this on its own...

The wholesale slaughter of the nice british superheroes in 'Zenith:Phase III' really freaked me out. Miss Wonderstar's Magic Kingdom/death camp. Lion and Unicorn bantering while thay blast Hotspur's army apart. Just the whole feeling of desperation that permeates that book. Yeesh.

Early 90's 2000ad, what I read as a kid, does it for me. Anything with a main character in danger.

Grant Morrison's "Inferno" was deeply uncomfortable to read. I was so sure Dredd was going to be offed and the whole "meat virus " thing was pretty disgusting.

Big page of Friday (Rouge Trooper II) on the operating table, his gutty-wuts all spilled out.

Last book of Tyranny Rex, Tyranny decapitated by Demons then comming back as a cosmic sperm thing in the last episode. Depressed the fuck out of little me. Fuck, anything by John Smith.

Maniac 5's human controller shot in the head so the 'droid won't be a threat.

Of course, 2000ad's too shit to care about these days.

Which is SO fucking sad and awful.

It really makes me worried that the editorial staff just have a terrible eye for what constitutes good writing. I mean, they haven't had an exciting, interesting strip writer in years, and they used to have the best.

Jesus, early nineties 2000AD.... Now that was a great comic.

Some of those freaky little strange tales (I can't remember what they wer called (not future shocks)) drawn by Rian Hughes - they were so fucking dark. That geezer with eyes on his chest! And the telephone to the dead! The art really made that one. All bright and fun and angular and just...wrong.
