It had these two attatchments, which I've no intention of opening:

zifen-0617.chm (182k), flgzhx.chm

And it came from here:

Has anyone else had one of these?

Sounds like the work of any of the Kak-Worm viruses. There was a spate of them recently in the UK, which caused some hassle by sending random message with massive attachments to address in the infected PC's address book (the original Barbe thread for which is here).
I'd suggest scanning your system for viruses (if you have no virus checker, get AVG), and checking the IP address.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mordant.

All I want to know is why in one sitting I get spam for bust-enhancement pills and mail-order Viagra. In addition, of course, to the ubiquitous offers of young teenage XXX pussy and Jennifer Lopez arse-fuck pics.
(One day, they will all pay)

Well I had a truely bizarre piece of spam, something like.

Do you like my new game
I thought you might like it
You're already playing it
Enjoy.

Just compared to the *make Money fast* it was quite surreal, Btw haven't had a MMF spam in ages, its all donkey sex, liquid viagra and the like, oh for those far off innocent days past

Oh two more thumbs up for AVG, very good bit of kit.

Yeah, there's a virus checker running on my PC. So far it hasn't kicked up a fuss. SamSpade.org draws a bit of a blank, so I'll do a bit more digging- see if I can find out anything else about the email or the IP number (218.14.184.205).

BTW, the thing seems to originate from China. Not sure who I could have wound up who lives out there, so it's prolly random (unless it's the flying invisible ant-sized government spy guy, all PO'd at me for ripping the piss out of his theory on my blog.)

SFD: are you using a non-webmail account? 'cos the Mordant-plugged Mailwatcher is great for bouncing messages back and deleting them from your server - I use it before I get my mail these days, and it's working a treat...

rothkoid - it's a hotmail account. i have the inbox filter set to 'exclusive', so i know in advance that what's in my inbox will be okay and would quite happily just ignore my junk mail, but the odd email i want turns up there, too - one offs i don't want to put in my address book. they're obviously not as bad as a virus, but i do wonder if msn draw any kind of line as to who they sell their address lists to. the porn titles seem to be getting nastier and nastier.

sfd: Mailwasher has this great facility which lets you bounce unwanted emails back from whence they came, so it looks like your addy is defunct. Do this often enough and you'll get struck off the mailing lists. Anti-spam sites will help you here. Set your preferences to show all the details about the originating address- that way you can grass them up to the ISP.

I don't think msn actually sell addys to porn merchants- it's more probable that a bot has grabbed your address and sent it to some unscrupulous folk. If it appears on a website or anything, you can insert text in there to fox some bots, eg: mordantcarnival@DIESPAMMERDIE!!!hotmail.com

If you have a hotmail account, never ever put your real name in the address (unless you have an extremely freaky real name) or make it "a_n_other" or anything like that, because there are lots of spammers who try every possible real name, combination of initials etc etc for the major webmail accounts.

Hotmail has got a lot better at filtering spam recently, but if it's an old account, you're probably still on spam lists somewhere. The only solution is to change mailboxes, I'm afraid. It's all very well bouncing mail back, but the list that you started off on will have been sent round to another twenty porn lists in the meanwhile.

I got one "re: looking forward to meeting you" that had nothing in it, yet it was 140K. The sender was no one I knew. No attachments. Go figure. Since I'm too wretched looking to have any secret admirers, I smell a rat.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Pretty much anything that size is likely to be a virus. There's been a lot of 140k - 150k attachments floating around in random emails I've been getting, too...

There's an advantage of looking at your mail on a Mac: lower market share means lower market share for virus writers, too...
