Mighty web-fu masters, hear my call: DIY/punk rock style

Have been asked to do a graphic design in a "Do It Yourself/punk rock style." And I know less than zero about punk. Anyone with a spare minute, can you throw out some leads for me? Pics, or names of bands? Anything in particular associated with this aesthetic, design-wise?

Basics would be photocopied elements, rough collage and ransom-note style text. See any Sex Pistols record cover for some of the early style, also Winston Smith's collage work, which achieved prominence by virtue of decorating Dead Kennedys discs. His stuff is pretty advanced, though...

If you've got a decent record store around, look for any underground 'zines, beginning with Maximuim Rock and Roll and working your way down to the most basic basement published stuff. The problem is that it's a style that's so self-referential and copied that it can be tough to find something representative of the 'real thing' as opposed to high-budget hackwork designed to exploit the kids. Oh, sorry. Got a little political there.

What's your context? Most of this stuff has some social/political bent and that may not work for you.

Common images tweaked to be arresting/offensive- think Queen Elizabeth with a saftey pin thru her nose. Union jacks, esp. with the colours altered. Leopard and other animal prints. Tartan. Fluorescent colours. Cut'n'paste.

My advice: duct tape. torn edges.
Handwritten fonts (psychopoetry is a good one).
Blown up typewriter fonts.
Graffiti fonts - spraypaint on concrete.
Black and white (or *any* high contrast) imagery.

Like these.

Stuff hearkening back to "beat" culture, 50s horror films & op art.

Sonic Youth did it pretty well:

Some related ideas here.

The cover for Goo featured scotch tape and fingerprints (although it's hard to find images of that on the web).

Thank you thank you thank you.

What's your context?

Designing Hallmark's new line of DIY greeting cards.

Kidding! Friend of mine is doing a monologue about truck stop hustlers for a solo show & wants some flyers designed.
