Toronto Digs Needed!

I don't know if I'll get much help here, but I thought I'd try. I'm almost certain I'm moving to Hogtown in August for school. I'm not picky when it comes to pads. The only two things required are cheap rent and a kitty friendly environment. Proximity to George Brown is a bonus but isn't necessary.

Anyone know a good place online to check for apartments, any neighbourhoods you'd recommend, or anyone looking for a roommate, please let me know.

Be Cool, Big O!

Forgive me for my ignorance, but is Toronto really called Hogtown? Why?

Doesn't yr school have any office you can go to, one that can help you find housing in the city? In my experience, schools that do not have much in the way of dorms/subsidized housing at least have offices that work to find their students places to live.

"Toronto's quiet emergence gave it the nickname "Hogtown" -- a town of very little interest."

Or...

"...once home to the many slaughterhouses and meat-packing plants that gave the city its nickname, Hogtown."

That's just about all I could find.

The school I've applied to has a housing board, but it is not online and Toronto is two hours away. I will be back down there in two weeks to find a place, so I'll look then. I'm just trying to get a feel while I wait.

To tell the truth, this is not my first pick, but I feel as if I really have no choice, since the other schools have taken such great pains to lose my transcripts, student number and other info. I'm having a great deal of trouble with them, and I'm running out of time.

When are you planning on moving/ need it by? I live downtown and I can see what I can do for you...how much is your budget?

It is not yet determined. Basically, the cheaper the better.

See what I can do for you. August 1st or September?

August, thanks.

I have no doubt that I'll be able to find a place. I just get nervous about stuff like this, particularly when I'm going to be homeless come August.

I'll warn you, that apartment hunting in Toronto can be very un-fun. It may be better now, of course.

Cabbagetown has some of the cheapest apartments, but it can be quite nasty, by Canadian standards, no not really that nasty. I lived in Greektown for 2-3 years and it was great. Also cheap is King st. west down by... damn.. by Dufferin!

George Brown has a good housing board, but only at the college. I you're looking for a room in a house with 5 students, then it should be easy to find a place. 2 bedrooms are the hardest to come by from my experience.

I might be looking too in a few months, but I don't find out if I'm accepted to U of T for a few more weeks. (bites nails)

Barry: Apartment hunting in Toronto is still un-fun. Hence, why I cling to my cheap, centrally-located one bedroom like a kitten falling off a tree (and into a pit of dobermans).

Are you willing to go the roomie route in trade for cheaper rent? If you want a place of your own, I'll hassle my landlord about openings in my building - close to GBC, decent and pretty cheap.

And you won't be homeless. Worst comes to worst, you can crash at my place for a while...

You're such a sweetheart, Betts.

The homeless thing is just panic-talk. I have a place in the Niagara Region I can crash, if need be. In fact, the condo I'm living in currently may not turn unavailable until the end of August. However, I'd like to find a place to live before September just so it would be one less thing to worry about.

The roomie option is something I may have to do, but given a choice, I'd like to live on my own. In all my years I have only ever lived completely on my own for only two months. That, and I'd really like to concentrate on my school work without the distraction of a roommate. Finally, I'm very protective of my cats, and seeing as I have two of them, many people may feel that I'm being a tad invasive.

Good news! I may be receiving surprise funding that would set all my worries to rest. Cross your fingers!

If you can ask your landlord for me, that would be super, BW! It sounds like perfect digs!
