and do i need one?

i'm self publishing a collection of short stories and i don't know whether an ISBN number would be useful/advantageous/essential. or indeed a disadvantage. i looked up the website for isbn in the uk, and it didn't give much information. does it make a difference as to how the collection will be seen/reviewed?

Well, I don't know whether they're essential or not, but they are the basis of cataloguing, and they're usually mentioned in reviews, booksellers' sites, &c - so they're certainly useful, and will make your book appear more professional. Don't forget to send a copy to the British Library...

ISBNs are not a legal requirement for publishing or self-publishing, at least, not here in the UK. I'd suggest that it probably is a good idea to acquire one however, for the very reasons that Kit-Cat Club has pointed out. I can't help but feel that a book without an ISBN is kinda like a lighthouse with no bulb; you know it's there, it's just kinda difficult to find.

The only potential problem for acquiring an ISBN for self-publishing, is that they can only be bought in blocks, and the smallest block is 10 (costing about £60). Of course, if you could find a group of people with their own projects who want to self-publish you could presumably split the cost, then share the resulting numbers between yourselves.

You may find this a useful source of information, unless it's the site you've already mentioned trying.
