Night terrors

Does anyone here know anything about night terrors in adults, with an emphasis on getting rid of them?

i dont know if this is the same, but i had horrible nightmares that woke me in a cold sweat for about 3 weeks at a stretch a few years back.
Not to sound dumb, but i started taking about half a dose of nyquil before bed, and i slept soundly.
Now i dont have them anymore, but i usually only sleep about 3 hours at a stretch, but thats another thread...

I'm not sure what the hell they are. The past couple mornings, just before I've woken up, I've had bizarre nightmares with no common thread except that when I wake up I'm incredibly physically weak and shakey. I figured it was probably night terrors since I've heard they involve a lot of thrashing around.

The actual content of the dreams is stuff that doesn't usually scare me, normally if I have a nightmare it doesn't leave me scared when I wake up, but these are frankly fucking me up.

I had them for a while as a teenager until my parents sent me to our doctor (who was also a psychiatrist) a few times and I decided that I didn't want to tell this dude (who's a really nice guy) everything about me. My night terrors stopped shortly thereafter. I've never heard of them in adults. Is it commonly accepted that night terrors, as regular nightmares, are a product of undue stress?

I know a few people with them and yes adults do get them. My friend was telling me that she was involved in some research to see if night terrors are passed down through families, by whatever means.
I'll have a word with her and see if she knows any good resources for dealing with them.

I've never had night terrors but when I'm stressed out I get anxiety dreams which involve really weird things happening like friends acting out of character and familiar places becoming hell you know. I usually wake up and feel freaked for the rest of the day but like I said it's only when I'm stressed by something that I've got to do.

I had these horrid things where I would be conscious, but I couldn't move or speak, I was totally paralysed. And, I was afraid, I was petrified. I've been informed that in fact I was astral travelling, but somehow, this isn't very comforting at all.
And, to reiterate: it scares many different flavours of crap out of me, because it happened last night.

mike[bro]: This is actually fairly common. When we sleep, our bodies produce a substance to interfere with the impulses that the brain sends to the muscles. This is to prevent us from acting out our dreams physically. Sometimes there's a little too much of this substance sloshing around, so the signals still can't get to the muscles even when the person is awake.

And yes, it is bloody scary, but not dangerous.
