Weird Trippy Music

I'm going to make up another CD with lots of weird sounding songs, and I'm looking for any suggestions, I'm thinking along the lines of ambient songs with weird sounds or voice overs - the kind of music that'll really mess with my head when I'm stoned.

Here's something I found on audiogalaxy by accident that along the right sort of thing, but I'm open to any suggestions -

You may already know most of this stuff, but I'll just fire my own preferences into the ether and see what you think. Been listening to a bit of Tangerine Dream lately, which is pretty good on the ambient side. There;s also a lot of older drum n bass music which fulfills the requirements of 'ambient' plus 'weird noises'- voices, samples from sci-fi movies and the like. There's a DJ Crystl song called 'Warp drive' or something, I think. Also Goldie's 'Ghosts of my life', which samples David Sylvian's voice and is kind of spooky/good. Actually, I'll look a few of these up and post em later.

On the more floaty/guitars side, there's stuff like Slowdive - any songs off Souvlaki are great. My Bloody Valentine is obviously unparalleled (cover of 'We have all the time in the world' worth getting if you haven't).
Sorry if I'm farting on about stuff that's obvious. There's also a song by Sabres of Paradise called 'Smokebelch II' which is really beautiful and exuberant.

Check out Naid, a Norwegian group. You can find their songs on Audiogalaxy, and the ones without English titles are highly recommended, simply for their length and the fact that they have vocals in Norwegian...a great sound. "Blastjarnan", "Visur Vatnsneda Rosu", "Modir" and "Yukawa 5am" are four that currently reside on my harddrive..."Visur" being probably the most spaced sounding of the lot, "Yukawa 5am" being very very chilled.

Smokebelch II is on one of the Cafe Del Mar compilations, and you could check out the tracklists of those on Amazon or the like and see if you can download any of those.

Jam & Spoon's "triptomatic fairytales" album also has it's fair share of tracks that seem to fit your profile, if the Armageddon Project tracks I got off Audiogalaxy are any judge. You could also look at tracks off of Fluke's "Six Wheel's On My Wagon", most notably "Groovy Feeling".

The Heads - Bedminster#1.

Totally not ambient I'm afraid, but full of wierd sounds and dialogue samples, and messes with my head pretty severely when sober, let alone stoned..

The Flaming Lips - The Big Ol' Bug is The New Baby

you simply gotta here this.

I just got Camper Van Beethoven's "Tusk" cover album, and most of it will mess with you a little, but none less than the backward-masking, sample cut & paste meltdown in the middle of the title track.

I would also recommend most of their self-titled third album. They do a close cover of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" (only with a violin as well as all the other stuff) (It's a chaotic instrumental space tune off Floyd's first album), and the songs "Peace and Love," "Processional," "Five Sticks" and "Une Fois" will bend your head.
Some of them are other Camper songs played backwards and then tweaked. Some have double sets of lyrics, coming at you from both ears at once. And some are gifts from outer space.

There's more info at Pitch-a-Tent Records, where you can sometimes buy records.

At their home page, you can get random mp3s and other stuff.

"A message from our Sponsor" by the Legendary Pink Dots- it's to be found on their album "Asylum", which is a fucking great album anyway. I'll never forget the first time I heard it... but I don't think I'll ever remember that time in too much detail either... But for mad psychedelic stuff with a voice-over... you can't beat it.

Hmmm. I'm sure I know a lot of stuff that might really suit yr needs, I'm just going to mention the ones that come to mind most immediately. I hope they come close to what you want.

"Hamburger Lady" by Throbbing Gristle seems to be exactly what yr asking for, but I'm not sure if it's going to be good - it's one of the most frightening songs that I know, it might result in a very bad trip.

"Providence" by Sonic Youth, which is all noise, piano, and a strange answering machine message, it has a wonderful effect.

Avey Tare and Panda Bear seem like they may be up yr alley - "Penny Dreadfuls", and "Essplode" are probably the best tracks to go for, though it should be noted that "Penny Dreadfuls" is listed on Audiogalaxy as "Chocolate Girl" thanks to the packaging for the album it's from being immensely confusing.

Sun City Girls might be a good band to check out for yr purposes, especially "Space Prophet Dogon", which I think is one of the finest psychedelic rock numbers I've ever heard. Another lovely psychedelic rock song that immediately springs to mind is "Jennifer" by Faust.

I'll write more later, I'll think about this a bit.

Oh, some more...

You should try out Bardo Pond, who specialize in trippy guitar rock - I mean, they named an album "Set and Setting" for christ's sake! I think that their best song is "Walking Stick Man" from that LP, but I'm sure you could find other songs to yr liking.

I think a lot of Yo La Tengo's new instrumental record might be good for what you want, particularly How Some Jellyfish Are Born" and "Sea Urchins".

I reccomend some of the instrumentals on the Pram record "Museum of Imaginary Animals" and probably other works by them (I don't know their works too well).

Sorry for going on about it again, but the one-CD version of the Flaming Lips "Zaireeka" really is one of the trippiest things I've ever heard..

I am absolutely loving the particular brand of freaked out space/stoner rock made by the 'Rev and the Lips and Bardo Pond etc. at the moment .. maybe I should make a tape of it..
