Miss Black America?

So... Miss Black America? I was reading NME today (yeh, it blows, but there was a copy in the school library and I was meant to be working... ) and they were featured.

On the one hand, they sound like they be, well... Mclusky, but on the otehr, I haven't heard either. Also, dispite their total "fuck major labels" stance, they send all their stuff to fucking NME- why?!

So- are they any good> They're playing The Joiners on the 6th of July- worth going to?

first disappointment - miss black america are four white english blokes.

nail in the coffin: "We will never sign to any major label in the UK: we will prove that you can be the biggest band in the world without sucking corporate cock and being forced to compromise by slimy fat cunts who view bands purely in terms of how much money they can bleed out of them. It is VITAL that we reclaim rock 'n' roll from those who see it purely as a commodity. It's time the kids took over the candy store."

homophobic, fat phobic and misogynist language, neatly packaged in just one paragraph. yawn.....

It's quite a long paragraph, and I'm sure I've seen it done in shorter- and where's the mysogony? Am I just really dense this morning?

pin - i thought i'd said this so many times on barbelith that i didn't need to repeat it! - 'cunt' is misogynistic language. also the phrase 'sucking corporate cock' has misogynist as well as homophobic meaning.

The phrase 'sucking corporate cock' has everything to do with prostituting yourself to a corporation and nothing to do with homophobia.

Yes, "sucking corporate cunt" is much better.

That way we assume that those in power are female, so it's not as paternalistic as assuming they have penises. Also it would then not be homophobic, as these guys are male and sucking cunt would be, for them, a heterosexual act.

I'd be inclined to agree.

Pin: I think the "cunt" thing = misogynist language.

Wouldn't dismiss a band 'cause they used the word cunt (by that reasoning I'd have to dismiss loads of my mates) or waffled about "sucking corporate cock"......I'd dismiss them 'cause of their tired, earnest beards, though.

not even gonna fucking get involved in that one..

Back to topic in hand;

I feel Miss Black America are the sort of band I should naturally like, in that a)they're a teenage British punk band who b)have a lot of political stuff to shout about and c)all the fanzine kids have gone absolutely wild for them..

..but, um, truth be told, I think they're worryingly shit. Their music sounds so .. weak .. for all their punk rock stance they sound like corporate 'indie' at it's most over-produced .. it's very much "like The Manics - and not in a good way".

I say buy Mclusky instead.

I think we’ve seen this before, haven’t we ?

Manic Street Preachers telling NME how they wanted to record one world-shattering double album and have it produced by Public Enemy, and then split up.

Cut to ten years later, and they have an almost permanent residence on the ballot slips for the Q awards.

Cheers Riz- this isn't a buying thing (neither they nor Mclusky are avalible on the island), I was just wondering wether they were worth paying £4 to go see live. As far as I know, Mclusky aren't playing anywhere near me for some time. If ever.

And I get the feeling that there's a certain ammount of colloqiual diectics at play here- they're running on the assumption that every gets that their use of "fat" is to imply that the people who run reocrd labels are rich, lazy and oppulant off other peopels hard work, and that "sucking the corporate cock" will conjure up the age old connotations of artistic prostiution to get further in a capital-orientated world. Cunt (and I have little doubt the man describes people as "cocks" too- does this make him (what's the word for anti-men?) anit-man, too?) has probablly just been wheeled out to make them sound hard.

I also doubt any of that is concious- there's a case to be made to a wholesale overhaul of the sort of language employed by this sort of band, but from what Rix appears to be saying, they're simply followers. If you were to change the language, I'm sure their vocab would change with it, without any difference in their actual opinions.

And The Manics are flag waving nationalistic socalists (Not National Socalists! I'm dumb, yeh, but not to the point of calling everyone I hate Nazis)- I think there are grounds to declare them idealogically comprimised on every single fucking level going. They set out to be media whores, but really... not that sort of media whore, surely?

If they're the kind of band you ought to like cf Riz then you should go to the gig to make friends and influence people.

Misogynist/homophobic language aside, the kneejerk and self-aggrandizing language they used in that interview snippet is very ridiculous and over-the-top, pretty typical of tiny British bands who traditionally talk big but lack talent entirely. Yuck. I won't even check out their music for free, thank you...

British Indie is so fucking weird, I'm telling you.

It's probably worth seeing them live for £4 actually.. what could possibly go wrong? you can always laugh at them if they're rubbish enough..

Ooh I know this one! I've met and seen the group a few times, as some of my best mates move in the same musical circles (bands local to Cambridge and Bury St. Edmunds area). Basically any politicised stuff you've picked up from them is a pose. Their lead singer (Seymour) thinks all this up and is a complete piece of shit. The rest of them are amiable enough (particularly Neil) and don't seem to be completely selfcentred and evil like he does.

You might have seen the message board on their site full of fans who use it as a kindof chatroom and who go to all the gigs? Ive met a lot of them as well: they are a nice set of groups who either go out with *or* idolise members of MBA... the latter tend toward the 15yr old girl fanbase. They're nice but unfortunately manifest standard teenage delusions in a worship for this group (well mostly the aformentioned singer).

They're worth seeing for £4 but only if your travel costs aren't high, and from what I've gathered reading this forum they do fit in with your taste (that to I, Pin).
Much better if they're around at a similar time/place are The Dawn Parade, similar stuff but done better by much nicer people (no these aren't my mates btw. These groups are kindof incestuous, they support each other in big ways. Unfortunately you did pick on the one with the utter bastard running it. Oh yeah to answer the misogynist question... yeah probably accidental language but it accurately reflects Seymour's attitude to all women who don't wanna sleep with him just cos his band's so great ;p. Not a personal grudge this, he just is completely blinkered when his actions might have the slightest effect on other people.

Interestingly the ages given on their site are out but a few years (adjusted downwards... think this might have something to do with the age of the fanbase, cos I do). Anyway sorry you didn't really need to know most of the above I guess, but I enjoyed writing it Have fun.

I actually have a copy of their album that I haven't listened to yet and will only do so now this thread has been started, which means I am either:

a) As lazy as my mother always told me I was

b) Really getting horribly old now, or

c) Finally only trust anything if I read it on Barbelith.
