Quick question: ebay...

Briefly, as someone who's never used it before, how hard is it to sign up for, and do stuff on, ebay?

See, we (my friends and I) now have 4 tickets to the Sonic Youth show in Manchester which we can't attend..

(in short, the guy who was going to drive us there has maddeningly decided that "going to a party where a girl he fancies will be" is a higher priority - needless to say, the rest of us are not happy, and if music fanatics had any strict organisational hierarchy, we'd bust him down to private and put him on latrine duty so fast his dog would feel it!)

It's a fucking pain. Never used to be. I tried to set myself up an account to sell stuff for the store, but it turns out that now you have to have a 10 feedback rating before you can sell stuff. Which means you have to buy 10 things before selling. Fuckers. I just do it under my brother's name now. That's the best idea if you're in a hurry. Find someone who's willing to sell them for you.

Zoom.

Oh. That's rather disappointing. Time to hit the messageboards like a seedy online tout then, I suppose.

I had an account on half.com and when ebay and half.com merged, my half.com account became an ebay account. that might be a backdoor you can use to get in. I don't know.

slight thread diversion but i have just recently purchased an item on ebay and plan to pay by postal order in uk sterling. Does the name of the person you owe the money to have to be printed on the postal order as well?

on an even larger diversion, does anyone know the best way for me to pay someone in Texas. I tired registering an account with paypal.com, but what the bastards don't tell you, is that your account can't actually be activated until you recieve your next credit-card statement, which is ages away. i can't send a personal cheque, cos they're printed in £sterling. Can i get a postal order printed in US$, or should i get a specialist cheque from the bank (which could cost me a shitload).

you can get an international money order manga. you'll probably be charged for the service though and it's alot of hassle. If it's on ebay, does the site not have a credit card payment system? sort of like one click on amazon? i think they do so you might want to look into that.

come to think of it manga, isn't the code on your credit card bill used to refund the small fee you had to pay for opening a paypal account? i think maybe you should look at the site again because as far as i can remember you should be able to send money first time

Just bumping this because I'm thinking of trying to sell craftwork over ebay. Any thoughts?

It's not that hard. I signed up a few months ago to sell and you have to give them credit or debit card details, but you don;t need a star rating or anything. As long as you have a card you should be fine. If not you're probably a tad screwed.

I've bought two things on ebay now, and I have a little one person good rating which is oddly satisfying. Maybe the fun of ebay is possibly directly related to receiving good ratings and has little to do with the buying or selling itself...

Oh. That's not true though. Both times I've won my bid, and it's majorly wicked.

As a quick sideline, try registering and bidding via HammerSnipe.

You're allowed 3 free bids per week, and what the service does is dive in with a bid on your behalf 10 seconds before the auction ends with the lowest bid it can (within your set limit), thereby avoiding any kind of bidding war, whilst making sure you get your bid in, no matter what time the auction ends.

I love it as it's won me several auctions with great prices, as occasionally I have been the ONLY bidder on an item, due to the lateness of my automated bid. Great service, and the sneakiness of it makes me give a 'Dr Evil' style chortle each time I win an auction....
